As September looms and the summer air turns just that little bit cooler, we are celebrating 2010′s hottest trends. Top of the list is pastels: think ice cream in every shade.

Channelling our ongoing love of Mad Men glamour and all things retro, pastels are a more understated extension of last season’s floral trend. And the good news is they’re far easier to incorporate into your home – and your wardrobe.

Apparently, they even flatter the face, too, with Balenciaga sending models out with pale aqua, orange and rose eyebrows for their A/W 2010 ready-to-wear show). Burberry, Derek Lam and Chanel all championed the trend, too.

We think a pale yellow SMEG may be a more viable look…

And contrary to popular opinion, pastels don’t have to mean girly pinks and purples. Incorporated with tough, modern accessories, they can create a light, playful, eclectic vibe without overwhelming with colour. Use chrome, glass and wood to add contemporary depth and texture. We love this room designed by egrimsley:

Our top pastel pick: the Keep Calm Compilation poster, £2.65 from Amazon.co.uk, pictured above.
