Chinoiserie is a beautiful and elegant style inspired by art and design from China, Japan and other Asian countries. Throughout the years many British designers have been influenced by this style and have adapted it to their own. Designs inspired by the Chinoiserie look can be seen in many places and vary greatly throughout the world of art and design, from fashion to interiors and garden design. What is extremely alluring about the Chinoiserie style is how delicate it is. Fanciful images of flora and fauna such as dragons and birds are highly popular and adorn many wallpaper and fabric designs.

The beauty of this style is that it is versatile, as it is available in various colours. Ranging from pale creams to bold pinks, its opulence shines through any colour. Here is a beautiful example of a print incorporating metallics. This gives a luxurious and opulent finish, not only to the design itself, but also the room in which it is being used.

This particular print can look can look exquisitely glamorous when used in bathrooms. The above images are two prints by British design brand Fromental, who produce beautiful eye-catching handmade wallpapers and fabrics.

This season Chinoiserie prints are also trending in the fashion world, and dresses alongside jackets richly embroidered with oriental motifs are highly popular. “This is Eastern futurism for the modern woman” states Calgary Avansino.

Printed Chinoiserie furniture can also beautifully dress a room. Implementing Chinoiserie-style soft furnishings and furniture instead of wallpaper into your home is also a way of embracing this fabulous and exotic trend.
