mydeco.com is expanding! In the next few months, we’re inviting a host of new designers to partner with us. One of our favourite new additions is Nkuku, whose focus is on eco-friendly, ethical homewares and gifts, inspired by their travels around Africa and India – even the company name is borrowed from a village in Zambia. To get to know them a bit better, we chatted with Chris and Zoe, who run their shop in Devon.

A selection of Nkuku's lovely products

Nkuku’s products come from all over the world. What prompted you to start looking for such exotic designs?

‘Nkuku was founded after a year travelling and working in Africa and India, meeting artisans, and witnessing their astounding skills but challenging living standards and restricted opportunities. Our objective became to promote and develop the traditional skills of these artisans and bring their work to market through wholesale and retail channels.’

We love your eco-friendly, sustainable approach to sourcing. Why is it so important to you?

‘The world is changing and business can do so much more to help the planet.  Nkuku is socially responsible and is built on the principles of fair trade and equal opportunity.’

Do you think there is enough focus on eco-friendly products in Britain?

‘It’s getting better but there needs to be more done from the top down.  They are still seen as geeky – not mainstream.’

Where do your designers get their inspiration?

‘All our products are inspired by the traditional skills of artisans throughout Africa and India.  We combine contemporary designs with age-old techniques, natural materials and sustainable methods of production to ensure each product is truly exceptional.’

What is your favourite Nkuku product, and why?

‘At the moment it is our Chunky Reclaimed Frame-it is handmade in Rajasthan from reclaimed wood salvaged from India railways and is a stunning way to display your favourite photographs.’

You recently hosted a Fair Trade tea party. What’s next in the Nkuku calendar?

‘World Fair Trade Day is on 12th May this year – have a look at the World Fair Trade Organisations Website.  It is a great way to promote Fairtrade principals and we will be working with all our stockists on some special promotions.’

Quirky accessories are my favourite and I love nothing more than finding something bold and beautiful to make a room really stand out! Read more posts by .
