Design Bark Big Top

mydeco boutiquer, DesignBark, has just released her new range of lamp shades, entitled Big Top, which uses an old English circus graphic. Sarah Newman is the founder of DesignBark and screen prints her designs onto real wood veneer using only FSC suppliers. Ellie and I went along to her South-East London studio where she showed us how to make one of her colourful lamp shades. Watch our video on mydeco TV to see our day at the ‘office’ with DesignBark:

Sarah’s new Big Top lamp shades as well as her original designs, Bridget and Hex, are available to order from the mydeco boutique.

This is really interesting and certainly unique. i would be interested to see an image that shows the shade when luminated. I would also be interested to know what is the maximum wattage of the lamp bulb one could use, obviously not thinking of the energy saving bulbs now. I am curious only because if you left the bulb burning for too long, would that not burn the wooden shade, or has it been treated?

    Hi Rose,

We’ve just emailed Sarah for you to see if she has an image she can send over and we’ve also asked her about the bulb and its effects on the wood. If I remember correctly there is no damage or adverse effect and the shade remains as lovely as when it was first bought, no matter how long the bulb is left on. I can assure you the shades look stunning and the light filters through the screenprinted graphics and casts a colourful glow – it’s really quite stunning. Keep an eye on this post and I’ll let you know what she says. All the best, Ellie.

Really great. I saw her work (at least I think it was hers?) at Tent, Brick Lane at the 2010 London Design Week. They look fantastic.

Hi again Rose, Sarah got back to me and said the bulb doesn’t get hot enough to burn the wood, and the shades are tested to the correct standards too. Ellie.
