If you haven’t heard of Mad Men, frankly you must be living on another planet.

While you may not necessarily spend your evenings glued to the BBC iPlayer  (a common British pastime since the show launched three years ago), you should at least have heard the name “Don Draper” winged affectionately around over a cup of tea or pint down the pub. And with good reason…

While I admit to instinctively shying away from perfectly set hairdos, buxom blouses and tweed three-piece suits, I just can’t resist the show’s squeaky clean aesthetics and inspirational sets – which are bang on trend right now. And judging by the world’s current fascination with faded pastels and nostalgic prints, it seems I am not alone.

To celebrate this worldwide love affair with Mad Men – and long may it last – we have selected our top ten Mad Men picks for your home that will transport you straight to a world of twinsets, scarlet lips and cocktails before noon…

1) Add some crystal charm

Peggy Olsen wouldn’t be seen dead drinking out of a plastic tumbler, and nor should you. Chunky-cut glass and crystal add a touch of class to cocktail hour in any home. Our favourites: Platinum band tumbler, £10.50, John Lewis; Silver, rosewood and crystal cocktail shaker, £475, Linley.

2) Go for Scandi-style wooden tones

Fifties glamour is all about striking lines and polished wooden surfaces – the more, the merrier. Think 60s Scandi meets Colorado skiing cabin; mix different tones and textures for an eclectic feel. Our favourites: Walnut desk, £225, DC Place; Shagreen desk tidy, £295, Linley.

3) Less is more

When it comes to retro style, function takes precedence, with clean and practical furniture that – comfortingly – does what it says on the tin. Team bold, unfussy pieces up with ornate crystal and patterned textiles. Our favourites: Desk from the fifties, £579, Little Fashion Gallery; Alpine hat and coat stand, £37, Furniture at Work.

4) Play outside the lines

Have some fifties fun with elongated shapes and unexpected angles. One or two statement pieces are all you need: play around with different styles for instant flare. Our favourites: Guru Diva table lamp, £70.40, Impex; Stainless steel revolving stand ashtray, £74.95, Proleno.

5) Accessorize, accessorize

For the perfect finishing touch, add retro accessories and get that extra Mad Men sparkle. A dial-up telephone is a must. Or, if you have some cash to flash, vintage art is guaranteed to turn heads. (If you don’t, buy a print -  after all the cocktails and cigarettes they won’t know the difference.) Our favourites: Jackson Pollock print, £22.95, Easyart; corded telephone, £28.29, Amazon.

I also adore this show and the aesthetic but Betty has a very girly style so I guess the boys don’t get it all their own way!
