Last month Milan hosted the 49th edition of the world’s most famous furniture fair, Il Salone – and it didn’t disappoint…but what really caught mydeco’s eye was the stand of innovative Dutch design emporium, Moooi – these guys never fail to be imaginative, and this year’s effort was no exception.

Having been guided to their new showroom in Milan’s Zona Tortona by a huge bouncing eye balloon, we were presented with our own paper doll style ‘catalogue’- original, practical and pocket friendly. Each kit featured scale model cutouts of all their latest products – so we each took away a mini Moooi World that fits in a shoe-box! In the showroom, new designs by Marcel Wanders, Arihiro Miyake and Nika Zupance amongst others, were playfully showcased in and amongst their oversized 2D counterparts to brilliant effect.

The piece de resistance – which has sent the design world wild – had to be the dark monsters inhabiting Marcel Wanders’ new signature design.  Fashioned from the blackest of quilted leather, his Monster Chair (pictured above) features a disembossed gnarly face on its upper back rest. If, like us, you can’t get enough of this monster magic, Wanders has also kindly reinterpreted his boutique sofa to include a quilted back and ‘monster’ cushion.

We also loved Arihiro Miyake’s lamps, feats of geometry which prove that  functionality doesn’t preclude beauty. Available in three sizes, these stunners are set on multi-faceted concrete bases, allowing the user to angle the light any which way by simply rolling the base. Genius.

Nika Zupanc for Moooi

Last, but by no means least, we loved Nika Zupanc’s 5 o’Clock Collection, based on the Slovenian designer’s memories of retro furniture and English porcelain. You can’t get more nostalgic than pink rose patterns…

Back at the mydeco HQ we’ve been busy playing dolls houses with our Moooi design kit…here’s one we made earlier, Blue Peter stylie. Let us know what you think… we think it’s rather good…
