Here at mydeco.com we love all things craft and handmade. This week Social Media intern Theo focuses on the softer side of life, with beautiful textiles and knitted pieces. He even features a handy how-to guide on making a quilt – perfect for our arctic ‘summer’ evenings.

1) Cluck Cluck Sew – Tutorial: strip and flip baby quilt

A nice tutorial that gives a hands-on guide on how to create a vibrant and attractive quilt. This blogger is very thorough, and uses good imagery and precise instructions that would make any beginner crafter feel comfortable. I fully intend on using this tutorial when I feel like whipping up a tidy little quilt.

2) Emma Lamb – Making everyday beautiful: pattern perfect

Emma Lamb has compiled an excellent set of images from her Flickr group, which include some incredible patterns and colour sets. This selection of hand-crafted fabrics was so visually appealing and inspiring that it had to make my top picks.

3) Mollie Makes – Mollie Makes on tour: Womad 2012

This lovely post looks at the looks at a craft stall at Womad, and how Mollie Makes teamed up with Oxfam Fashion to help young girls and families make feather hair braids and friendship bracelets. There looks like there was some great designs created, and everyone looks like they really enjoyed themselves. Good to see some excellent craft, charity and fun all tied up into one post.

4) The Guardian – Reduilding Fukushima, one craft piece at a time

This post reviews a Japanese craft exhibition that took place in mid-July. The exhibition focused on unique design, and aimed to showcase how much craft has progressed since the terrible earthquakes in Japan. In my view, the brilliance in much of Japanese craft is due to pieces looking contemporary, but also having powerful, traditional elements. Although not image-heavy, the post is very detailed and gives a great insight into recent Japanese design.

5) The Pink Button Tree – Handmade and stitched with love – my first quilt

This post reveals the pictures of Lucy’s first hand crafted quilt. She has created a pretty and colourful quilt, which catches the eye and would be perfect for any young child. It has a really nice alphabet fabric that makes the quilt not only look comfortable, but educational, too. A nice, personal post that also gives links to some useful videos quilt making tutorials. Well done Lucy!
