On Tuesday evening, I went to the IFDA’s Rising Stars of 2010 event hosted by Safavieh. Kevin Isbell was one of three young, extremely talented designers being honored, though he is no newcomer to the industry. Although Kevin Isbell Interiors is but a year old, Isbell was one of famed Bilhuber & Associates’ top designers for five years. Prior to working for Jeffrey Bilhuber, he spent four years with Celeste Cooper. Kevin Isbell knows his stuff– and it shows.

His work is sophisticated, subtle, and artful. The console above, in which he juxtaposes natural elements with a silver gilt table, demonstrates his capacity to fuse an appreciation for organic forms and luxe details. It is little surprise that Kevin cites some of his influences as sculptural and textural artists like Richard Serra and Anselm Kiefer– a command of textural depth is evident in all of his work.

The image above exemplifies his ability to layer elements deftly– I love the Berber rug on top of the sisal, with an Eastern-influenced wood table and lucite bench replete with a chartreuse cushion. Under Isbell’s curation, these starkly contrasting pieces look as though they are meant for one another.

His interiors don’t leer at you– but rather soothe, in a smart, clean way. I feel calm just absorbing the photographs of his work.

Isbell has worked on interiors from New York to the Caribbean, and everything in between. From pied-a-terres to luxury yachts, he brings a sense of refinement to each project, while translating the wants and needs of his clients. His latest project is a grand home in Greenwich, CT, featured below. While he may be this year’s IFDA Rising Star, in my book, he’s already risen.
