However big or small your bathroom revamp, plan it with expert advice. We asked Sarah Watson, founder of Balineum, purveyors of elegant bathroom linens and accessories, to share her top tips on how to design your bathroom.
Which one essential item makes a bathroom perfect?
Great bathroom towels, as you use them every day.
How can I make a small bathroom look and feel luxurious?
Squeeze in a bathroom stool if possible and fresh flowers. I’ve learnt from photo shoots that flowers elevate any room while a stool is multi-purpose; it’s a seat, storage and a magazine table.
How important is colour – what do you recommend?
I like some colour in the bathroom – even it is just shades and textures of white. Avoid painting walls a stark white (the landlord bathroom special) as it can look really harsh. For a more natural and flattering look, choose an off-white paint or something with a little pigmentation.
Which bathroom accessories do you recommend?
Trays – they contain clutter and make use of awkward spaces like window ledges or the top of the toilet.
Carpet vs laminate flooring?
Laminate! Never, ever use carpet in a bathroom. Even better than laminate, install floor tiles or floorboards.
What to avoid…
Carpet and cheap plastic shower heads.
If there’s one thing you remember…
Build in ample bathroom storage (a towel cupboard, and behind the mirror or within the vanity for lotions & potions). Use containers, trays, baskets and other bathroom accessories.
If money is no object…
Have Waterworks USA design you a new bathroom.
If you’re on a budget…
A coat of paint or wallpaper and new towels works wonders.
And Balineum’s parting words of bathroom wisdom?
The bathroom is the place you begin and end your day, so take some time to decorate it and make the space work for you.
