It’s the beginning of March and officially one of the busiest months of the gardening calendar. Fairtrade Fortnight also kicked off yesterday, so the start of spring is all about growing your own and getting your garden ready in a more sustainable way.
And the top trend alert this season is to have your very own allotment in your backyard. DIY food? You can’t be more sustainable. But while you may think that summer is eons away, it’s almost too late to start sowing some seeds.
Whether you’re buying to plant in- or outside it’s time to start thinking about it now. Don’t know what to buy? That’s fine – here’s the top 10 seeds you need to start thinking about purchasing:
You’ll need to start pruning, chopping, changing and digging up your garden if you want to start growing your own veg. While it may seem difficult at first to imagine yourself as a harvester of crops, there are some fantastic gardening guides that will take each stage step-by-step. Below is a great DVD (£10) with all you need to get started.

Growing your own vegetable patch is just part of a much larger trend of keeping the garden ethical and environmentally friendly. I mean, the last thing you want is your nosey neighbour snooping over the garden fence to see your irresponsible use of plastics. And with it being Fairtrade Fortnight, there’s no better time to start thinking about ethical garden purchases.
Fairtrade Fortnight is a nationwide awareness campaign to acknowledge the producer of many products we take for granted. It provides fairer and more ethical working conditions, pay and business encouragement for many farmers and makers across the world. And this fantastic attention to product origin will also enhance your garden into a natural paradise.

This funky, Fairtrade trug (£10) has a variety of uses and is made from recycled rice bags, it’s produced in Cambodia and every one is unique. It’s a quirky accessory for the garden with a feel good factor and perfect for Fairtrade Fortnight.

Growing veg is a great idea, can be tricky at first! (Trust me on this one!)
Looking at the ‘top ten environmental products’ however, I can see how most of them are, but the hammock? Surely it damages the tree, no?

Some great ideas on using recycled material for your garden, a very low cost solution and it can be fun to decorate and customise makeshift pots etc.
