Fast Growing Plants?

Asked by: bwarned

I need to find some fast growing plants to hide my unsightly neighbors from view when i'm having garden parties. Can anyone give me some guidance on what to buy from the local gardening center?

Buddleia grows fast and smells divine, conifers aren't to my taste but many varieties grow really quickly and screen brilliantly and viburnum is lovely too. What about putting up a trellis screen covered with a climber like clematis? That's probably the quickest solution of all! Make sure you prepare the ground with plenty of compost and water well so they grow to their full potential.

Try Llelandi trees. My friend's daughter was called Llelandi. I didn't like it at first, but now it's growing on me ;)

have got a brilliant suggestion - it's called a solanum (potato flower)- grows incredibly quickly - it's a climber (like the clematis option below) so you'll need a good solid trellis screen. It's evergreen and has either white or purple small flowers that are open from mid summer to late autumn (mine is still in flower at end of November). The purple on eis slightly more aggressive, but both grow fast... Really beautiful as well as efficient!

DON'T GO FOR LLELANDI TREES!! Deeply unattractive, really hard to control and illegal in many places (councils will demand you cut them down if they grow too high).

I'd go for the trellis and climber idea. Honeysuckle, clematis or jasmine, which smells quite nice, too.

If you want a climber that grows REALLY quickly go for the Russian Vine, also known as 'mile-a-minute' vine.It gives a really good , very quick screen cover. Not the most noticeable flower on it but if it's cover you're after you could plant that first, then plant a climber with a nice flower next to it to intertwine and give more colour. Keep away from Lleylandii. You'll have to keep it's height in check or pay to get someone to do it for you. If you've got space, plant two or three climbers that flower at different times so that you've always got something in bloom. Good luck, Jan
