Painting pine drawers

Asked by: lorna007

I want to revamp my kitchen. I want to paint the doors and drawers. They are made of wood in a country pine style (could be light oak) I know they have a factory "finish", not exactly varnish or wax, but a definite something. They are quite detailed with panel inlays, so sanding could be awkward. Do I need to sand down etc or is there a paint that will go straight on ??

Hi, I have been around the furniture finishing business must of my life,I am only eighteen, but I have finish more furniture in all type of finishes than most people would do in ten life-times,I have been in business for the last two years making and finishing furniture and my father as been doing it all his life and he is a master cabinetmacker. Now lets get to your finishing problem, firstly about sanding,no you do not need to sand down unless the finish that is on it already is chipped, what you need to do is de-greass,as your fingers leave body oil on it everytime you have handled it,if you go over it with a fine wirewool this will take the oil and durt off, then you can re-paint it with a brush, but get yourself a stippling brush and as you apply the paint with your paint brush you will find you leave paint in the detail go over the full door or drawer front with the stippling brush this will get the paint out of the details and also the brush marks, leaving you a top class finish.Grant

Hi, it is Grant again, if you have never used a stippling brush, all you do is lightly tap down from about 2" high on to the new paint work, it will look lumpy at first but this will lay-down as the paint dries, keep wiping any paint build-up on your stippling brush on a clean rag, you can use any type of paint but if you use emulsion paint when dry go over it with a water-based varnish, this will go on like milky-white but will dry clear, but do not forget to go over it with your clean stippling brush or to let the layers of paint too dry first, you will have a finish to have pride in, showing it off to your friends. Hope you have fun, if you have any problems, email me on bespokedirect@btinternet.com and I will help. Regards Grant.
