Getting rid of junk - but don't want to throw it away!

Asked by: Sapphire2

I'm moving house in a few months, but I have so much stuff in the house that I just don't have space for in my new place.

I don't really want to throw it away though, so any idea of how to get rid of it? I've never used ebay but wondered if anyone else thought this was a good way to get rid of things I no longer need? Any other ideas?

eBay is great, but if the item is bulky, or you just can't be bothered with the shipping process, donate it to freecycle. http://www.uk.freecycle.org/ This site is briliant - you can post your description of any itme, and then doubtless it will be found by someone who is looking for that very thing! You might even find a few treasures for your new place!

PS - make sure you put your location on your ad, so that you only get people who are in your local area, minimising pick up hassle.

I know you don't want to throw it away, but thought I'd add that some Councils do take away bulky items for householders. Where I live in N London the Council take away up to four bulky items a year (baths etc). You call them up and leave it outside your door. If things get really bad (you have a lot of junk that can't be recycled) you can get dudes to come and pick it up in a van (rather than by for a skip). I used these guys: www.anyjunk.co.uk

Mopsylouise is spot-on. Ebay is great for small items, collectors' items etc. Freecycle is a wonderful way of "recycling" things you no longer want but which others might be desparate for. I have used both and have had no bad experiences.
