A traditional shyrdak rug made entirely by hand by the nomadic rug makers of the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia.
The rug consists of a decorated surface layer of interlocking felt shapes sewn through to a thick felt base.
Red, green, pink, purple and blue felt are combined in the centre panel and thick outer border with natural un-dyed white and dark brown wool felt used in the double zig-zag border (denoting 'mountain range').
Multicoloured braiding is alternately orange, red, crimson and pink, with pink, green, orange and white combined in a thick braid around the outer edge of the rug.
The rug has seen active service on the floors and walls of nomadic yurts since 1990 when it was made and yet is presented in excellent condition.
