Design Tips
1. Sofas - don't buy a sofa on looks alone, sofas last a long time.
2. Antiquities - In private homes, objects are seen by fewer people, but more intently. You see one special piece and give it real concentration.
3. Have the whole room scheme in hand before you proceed with purchases.
4. Paint colour is crucial; don't be afraid to use darker shades which work particularly well in period interiors. It should be the last thing you choose. Fabrics come in far fewer colours so its easier to choose fabric first and then find a paint that will work with it.
5. Treat small rooms like big rooms. Large important pieces can transform a small room far more than small insignificant ones. Its hard to overscale.
6. Get small pieces of special fabric to work hard fo you. Use simple fabrics on the big items such as sofas and curtains. Exciting prints will have more impact used sparingly as a cushion, a panel, a runner down a chair or a banner on the wall.
7. Different textures - rough weaves, smooth silks, basket work, grainy leather - are as important as colour and pattern. Part of the attraction of beautiful old textiles is that you want to touch them.
8. Cream is a many splendoured thing. Its shades are infinite: pink/cream and yellow/cream. Make the right choice by taking the paint or fabric chart out to a good light, and never make decisions in a hectic department store.
9. Choose decorative chests and trunks and boxes for stylish living room storage - like the Andrew Martin chinese style amber lacquered storage trunks.
10. Minimalism is being replaced by a much glossier look. Look for heavy silks, silk velvets, glazed silks, devore velvets and even fake furs.
