One of the UK's most unique creative talents, the work of textile designer Celia Birtwell has spanned four decades from Fashion to Interiors. Her witty and whimsical prints have been worn by the world's most famous and glamorous people and can be found in some the most exclusive international hotels. She was one of the first designers to bridge the gap between fashion and interiors

Celia Birtwell

The work of the UK's most celebrated textile designer, Celia Birtwell sits effortlessly between fashion and interiors and can be used with ease in contemporary or classic homes.

In 1984 Celia launched her own home furnishings range. Her designs immediately epitomized the boom in interior decoration and her prodigious talent was now making the home as fashionable as she had made clothing in the previous two decades.

Her work is timeless, evoking a sense of whimsical romance and classicism that moves effortlessly from fashion to interiors.

Her designs have adorned international hotels from Claridges to the world's only 7 star hotel, The Burj Al Arab in Dubia.

Today, Celia Birtwell is still the toast of London! Her three hugely successful fashion collections for Top Shop have been the most successful collaboration to date all selling out within a matter of minutes, with the dresses being worn by celebrities such as Kate Moss and Keira Knightley.

2008 will see Celia launching a range of products across fashion and lifestyle to an international audience.

Design Tips

  • Inspiration
  • Don't restrict your inspiration resources to just interiors, look at fashion, textiles, exhibitions and galleries to gain fresh and exciting ideas. Keep a log of everything you like and let yourself explore and add some diversity in creating design schemes for your home.

  • Prints
  • Use a bold print as a feature of the room, either as a feature wall, upholstery, or a rug or throw. Use this as the main design statement and keep the remaining decor more simple to compliment the print.

  • Symmetry
  • Create balance in your room by using symmetry. A good technique is duplicating items like vases, chairs, cushions and small tables and placing them either side of a bed, fireplace, doorway or sofa to help you create a professional and sophisticated space.

A design icon, Celia Birtwell, is considered to be one of the most important British textile designers to date.
