Home decoration, especially renovations, can be a fraught area when it comes to maintaining domestic bliss and calm. Often, the police reports eupemistically refer to such lively exchanges of opinion as "domestic situations". Also known as raging bloody rows.
So I decided to compromise on my kitchen design.
Yes, I'm just going for what my wife wants.
And then making small alterations and suggestions...
Which means I'm in charge of opening up the fireplace, which may be its 1905 state somewhere behind a lot of rubbish and bricks and an odd gas back-boiler contraption.
I think a coal-effect gas fire, as we have in our lounge, (often mistaken for real fire) would be great, as there's nothing quite like real flame to bring the focus to the hearth... but most of the designs of fires I have seen are NAFF.
I plan to be updating this blog with my design discoveries on the path to a nice fire and surround...

Opening up the fireplace sounds like quite a task! As for the compromise, how would you design your kitchen if you had the discretion to do so?

Fireplace should be fairly easy, only some light brickwork in the way behind a shelving unit that's been fitted.
If I had my own discretion (you've not met my wife obviously), all I'd really want to add would be a breakfast bar and a space for TV / computer access so my little girl can do work there, but I think I'll work in the TV/computer after the fireplace and ceiling are complete, and perhaps have a breakfast bar / worktable that can be easily collapsed out of the way.

The solution for the kitchen can be written in words. Think jigsaw and words and work it with the space.

Well, it's almost complete - just the walls and cieling to paint, and the floor to re-cover. Choices still to be made there. Will post some photos soon-ish.
