  • You never know where life is taking you.

I was working away in my workshop, when a new customer came in, he told me he had been told if anyone could make what he was looking for, I was the one to see, which is very nice to know people are talking about my work. he showed me some photos he had taken when he was in the US, they where of Garden Pergolas, they was nothing like he or I had seen in the UK, so we arranged for me to go round to see his garden plot, I took the size and went away thinking this is a new one for the book, when I returned to show him some drawing of what design ideas I had come up with for him, he took one look and he told me he would leave it to me to make and install the one I would think would fit the type of property he had, I tried to discuss money with him but he again he said whatever it cost he would be happy with. I made and installed it while he was away again in the US, when he came back and it was completed, I had even got a gardener friend in to plant it out for him, he was over the moon more »

  • Light-up furniture

Hi everybody, been run off my feet over the last few weeks, but things are slowing down abit now. I had a new cliant call on me last week, he was looking for a coffee table that will light up, I have seen them on the Web, but what they never show is the wire to the plug socket trailing on the floor, as this is a big problem unless you are lucky and have a socket in the middle of your floor, when I said something about this, the new customer said he had never given that  much thought, but he could see the problem, I asked him why he needed a light-up table, he replied it was just for design in the room, after this I desided to show him something I have been working on for a month or two, it had nothing to do with coffee tables, but when he saw it he could not beliave his eyes, what I had shown him was a carving, that lights up and there is no power to it, so no wire needed, he asked  how did it work, well I said at this moment this is a trade secret, but I told him a few things, like more »

  • Going international.

Hi everyone, I have just had a very interesting email from the USA, NY. they have been looking at my website, they are very interested in my pedestal designs, will have to phone them in the morning. It was from NYCLI (New York Child Learning Institute) they are looking at my light up range, so you never know, I may be opening a retail outlet in NY before the end of the year, with what they have been saying in there email they love them and they cannot get anything like them over there, the prices I have quoted them by email  including shipping, is half the price of a plain pedestal over there. I will keep you all informed as to the out-come of my International Trading.

  • Full Coloured MDF.

Hi everyone, I have found a new product that is on the market, it is hard at the moment to find, but it will like everything else be more availible within twelve months, this going to be very useful to any designer, we have all looked at MDF as a base materail, some have just varnised it as they like the colour, well I wil not say anything else on that subject, we have had all the colours under the sun on the face on MDF, well MDF as come of age, now you can get it fully coloured, the colours are black / green / yellow / blue / red / gray, you can cut and shape it, mould  plus sand it as you like, but you will still have the colour there, you can mix the colours to make very interesting furniture, it is brill for varnishing or laquering, it is also WR  and DR rated, UV colour fast rated as well, just think of the things you can do with it, shelving / wall covering / any type of unit you can think of. If anybody would like anymore info please post message.

  • Let the end user decide.

I have for sometime been thinking about furniture design in general, I have always wondered why is it that the furniture designer, always think they know what the end user needs/wants/would like to have, this as been a puzzle to my way of thinging, for the last houndred years or more this as been the case. The first time I can think of when this was not the case, was the fitted kitchen and bedroom industry, giving the end user the chance to design a layout to fit there own individual space they had, but within limatations with standard unit sizes for un-standard rooms, but over-all it as worked well, with the addition of many  fillets at the ends. The one thing like I said before, is why is there nothing or very little for the living areas of any home, that gives the end user this option of layout with furniture, I know you have the corner seating which gives them some sort of layout but it is again limited to what you can do. So I have decided to design some form of open storage more »

  • New Group for everyone if interested in furniture.

Hi everyone, I have been a member for just under a week, I am finding my way around mydeco site, I find it a brill site, but one problem I cannot find a members group, that is about furniture design, so I have started one myself, I have called it Furniture Designer, it is not just for furniture designers or makers but for anyone who as a interest in furniture. So I am hoping for a lot of input by other member, and I am going to try and start it of with some ideas as to what we can start with, like where is the design of furniture going to be in lets say 5/10 years from now, moving back or forword, are we going to finish furniture in colours from the sixty's, what is it going to be made of plastic / wood or even recycled materails of some kind, what is the shape of thing to come, lines or curves this is the problem, well this is the time for you to put your ideas in writing. If you are a furniture designer or maker, if you cannot find a supplier of some type of materail just ask, you more »

I am a eighteen year old lad, that designs and makes furniture, I have my own workshops with all the latist machinery at hand, I have been in business from when I left school at Sixteen, I work seven days aweek and have done so from starting my business, no holidays so far, but my time will come, I have someone and she understand you have to put 200% into any new business to make your mark in the world. I will make any type of one off's, in any style, copy to match what you have already got, I have been around furniture making from when I was about four, as my father as always been making furniture, so you can say it is in my blood. I do have the usual other interest that a eighteen year old as, but I have put them on the back burner until I get myself well known within the industry. Local papers have done a couple of write ups about me and next week I am on the local radio, as they what to know how hard I found it to start up my business at the age of sixteen, "well" have I got a more »
