  • About Greer

I am about to embark on an incredible journey into the world of Interior Design. After completing 2 terms of short courses at Central Saint Martins, I decided to apply for the wonderful blended learning Professional Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration from the KLC School of Design in Chelsea, London. They've kindly taken me in, let's hope I continue to impress them...

  • Struggling

As you may or may not have noticed, my blog has been rather quiet of late. It turns out that sprain I was talking about turned out to be RSI. In both wrists! If anyone had told me about the pain beforehand, I wouldn't have soldered on for months with a daft typing injury and got myself some physio pronto I let KLC know what happened and they've been very understanding. Now I'm on the verge of finishing my first project and I'm very excited. I've just used the moodboard feature on here to try and express what look I'm going for, so please have a look. It's called 'Seaside Spirit'. Anyway, after months of pain and recovery, I'm not allowed to spend too much time writing this blog or my hands will fall off. So expect lots of mini instalments from me instead!

  • Small problem...

I'm supposed to be sketching every day now to get my drawing skills up. So obviously now I have sprained (possibly fractured) my wrist! Needless to say, there has been a lot of swearing and crying. I'm still going to work, with my husband dressing me and my wrist the best he can, but my typing has somewhat gone to pot. You try typing with your other hand! Now I can't interview anyone (can't take notes), go to any meetings (can't take notes) or even sign birthday cards (sorry Nigel). Still, I'm sure a combination of red wine and anti inflammatories will help.

  • The client!

I almost forgot to tell you about my experience with the client! Thankfully, Lindsey is a fake client but I will try and do my best for her regardless. We got to ask her around an hours worth of questions, which apparently is at least twice the amount you'd normally get with a client (worrying...). I think her answers have pointed me in the right direction. She appears to be a happy fun loving lady who likes a contemporary style. She's also extremely sporty, rich and needs a guest bedroom cum office in her loft. Lindsey's also got a weekend home by the sea and has a thing for natural light and textures. I see a picture forming in my mind, but I can share it with you all until I've got my project down on paper (well we can't have fellow students nicking my ideas now can we?!) I'm due to hand it in my 5th January, but think I will get it done before the Christmas break so I can relax a little.

Good luck. Your new course sounds brilliant.

  • And now the depression sets in...

I've had such a lovely week at KLC. I've spent my time making new friends, learning to draw plans and elevations, met my first client and now I have to go back to work. Don't get me wrong, I actually quite like my job, but it's not even remotely creative and I'm really going to miss going to college. If the course wasn't so expensive, I'd be doing it full time! Still have done my best today to try and cheer myself up including popping down to market to see lovely butcher man (with husband in tow) and persuading husband that we really need to do a boot fair tomorrow. Its surprising how much stuff you can get together for a boot fair if you give yourself an hour! I suppose that I now need to set myself little goals to get me through each week at work until I finish the course (Dec 2010). On the good side, hubby went and booked us 3 weeks in Australia next year but taking away my course dates, I now have 3 days holiday left until March 2010. I forsee a lot of fake dentist appointments...

I hope someone from the course doesn't read this!!! ;) You may end up with a lot of real fillings!

  • Think before you ink!

Our dear tutor Kevin has installed this mantra in us today. Despite that, inking is bloody hard! You have to ever so light on the pen, as the slightest pressure could tear the paper or smudge the line. I find standing over the work instead of sitting helps with my concentration until the back pain takes over! also the discovery of erasing mistake with a scalpel helps a great deal...Also got our first online tutorial which is going to prove to be a wonderful technology for us, and if we have webcams and mics, we can even ask questions live! Kevin casually mentioned at the end of the day that we'll be getting our first project tomorrow (to be completed by 5th Jan) which is exciting. Then he mentioned that well be meeting our client on Thursday. CLIENT! Not a real one surely? I know my lines are improving but I don't think I'm quite ready to be launched on to a real live human being! Hopefully,it's one of the tutors wearing a moustache and glasses to disguise themselves as a client...

  • Can't seem to draw a straight line...

...in front of 24 students and 3 tutors! First day at KLC has gone well. Totally nerve-wracking but have met some great people (hello Dion you troublemaker) all of who seem to be in the same boat as me. There's a dentist, a lawyer, other professionals, a few Mums and a couple of locals all wanting a career change, so I definitely seem to have chosen the right course. We've been thrown straight into drawing exercises, and I don't know whether it's nervousness, or not being at home with my own equipment, but I can't quite seem to draw properly! I know it's only my first day, but my head is spinning and my angles are all over the shop. Once I'm back home, I'll have plenty of space to stand up, hunch over and re do my work. Am also beginning to wonder how on earth I'm expected to carry home an A2 portfolio, A2 drawing pad, a whacking great course folder and my suitcase home on the tube on Friday. Still, a very civilised day ending with wine and networking, thanks KLC x

  • Branding and stuff

Thanks for all your advice on helping me choose a name for my future self! I've settled on Peachey Design as it's quite memorable/humourous, features my surname and most importantly it's non interiors specific. I wanted it this way as I design lots of other things (including websites) and I don't think I'll ever just concentrate on one area, so it gives me a lot of scope for the future. I'm getting some business cards ready so my Mum and friends can start 'pimping' me out to people so I have some live projects to work on once I start my course. Eventually I'll go the whole hog and get compliment slips, letterhead etc, but for now, I think just a stack of business cards and the beginnings of a website are most sensible.

  • Finally, some time to myself (part 2)

Good news is, my Mum feels so guilty for taking all my time up (I'm there again tomorrow to install the even newer computer replacement), she's offered to put me up in the hotel directly opposite the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre for a week at the start of my course! I'm obviously over the moon, but hubby not so happy as he has to do the chores for a week on his own...

  • Finally, some time to myself (part 1)

Due to Mum's computer worries, I've been spending quite a lot of time helping her out rather than sorting out my home office/2nd bedroom/design studio. Finally today I actually have some time to myself. It may sound a little anal, but I've set up a nice interiors glossary database complete with loads of terms (courtesy of KLC) and I've started to add pictures to it as well so hopefully once day I can recognise my architraves from my anaglypta (obviously only on the a's at the moment!). I've set up loads of magazine files, some with magazines in, some with samples in. Been trying to find out just what stationery I do have before I spend loads of money on even more... Room still looks quite messy though, and I've only got one free weekend before my course starts (am away twice before then). To top it all, despite me forcing my Mum to buy a new computer to ease her worries, HP have told her to take it back and get a new one. So basically the last weekend I spent there was a total more »

  • Money troubles

Have spent the whole of my holiday worrying about how to pay for the course fees at KLC. We did try our best to whack it on the mortagage, but thanks to the credit crunch, a resounding no is what we got from Abbey. Spent the next day feeling rather ill and worried about having been offered a place on an amazing course and not being able to pay for it. Fortunately, good old Natwest have come up with the goods! My husband sneaked into town when we got back from Hastings, range me from the bank asking me how much I wanted and sorted it out! Needless to say, I am now celebrating with a very large (bottle sized) glass of wine figuring out the colour of magazine files to store all my new samples in my home office.

What a good husband! Brownie points for him I think.
