Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway were both born in Lancashire in 1961. They met in 1981 and married soon after. Together they co-founded the internationally successful Red or Dead label that won the British Fashion Council’s ‘Street Designer of the Year’ award an unprecedented three times in a row in the late 1990’s.
After 21 consecutive seasons on the catwalk at London Fashion Week, Wayne and Gerardine sold Red or Dead in a multi-million cash sale.
The Hemingways now focus on their burgeoning design and consultancy business, hemingwaydesign, which continues their philosophy of making good design available to everyone, not just the wealthy.
The business’ highest profile project is the award winning Staiths South Bank, a 800 property, mass market housing project on the Tyneside where the company was involved with the master planning and architecture through to the landscaping and the marketing of the project.
Further projects and awards.
Other projects include the first Thames Gateway schemes in Dartford and a 12 month project to create a new vision and masterplan for the 60’s new town Skelmersdale.
Wayne is the chairman of Building for Life, a CABE (Commission for Architecture and The Built Environment) funded organisation that promotes excellence in the quality of design of new housing. The couple both received MBEs for service to design in the June 06 Queens Birthday Honours.
Surface View
Surface View is a collection of dramatic images that lend themselves to home or commercial interiors. The company works with users to select an image that suits their interior space and their personality and then customise it to create a high spec mural wallpaper to perfectly fit the customer’s requirements and space. The company has an enormous bank of images from which to draw inspiration through collaborations with the V&A, The land of lost content, the world’s largest archive of 20th and 21st century popular culture, as well as extensive photography collections and maritime scenes.
Wet
Wet is the latest collection from Hemingway Design. Stunning wall tiles designed to make your home look great. The tiles are in the same large scale designs that are a signature Hemingway look, and are very versatile, lending themselves to use in almost any room of the house. So why stick with just the kitchen or bathroom when you could have a feature wall in a living room, or a headboard for your bed.
The ranges within the collection can be used in a number of different ways. You can really have fun playing with the scale of the circles with Hemp, from the large Quadrant through the medium circle of the insert to the smaller circles on the strips. Or simply use the plain tile landscape, set brickbond in a kitchen with the occasional insert for interest.
