  • Protecting your designs!

Get intellectual property protection!  Design Rights can be a powerful method of protection. They can be used instead of or with a Patent. Design Rights cover the appearance of a product. For example if you design a new type of chair you are unlikely to be able to get a patent for a chair because a chair is not a new idea. However, you can stop people copying your chair design by invoking your design rights. Design rights can be unregistered or registered. Unregistered rights exist automatically, but you would have to prove when and where you created the design if you wanted to take legal action against somebody else. If you register your design it is much easier to prove infringement. Registration of a design with the UK Intellectual Property Office is straightforward and costs £60. It can last for up to 25 years. The UK Intellectual Property Office web site has a lot of useful information about these and other rights.

  • Think Colour

Hi there KK Designs, I'm sure Tricia Guild's book/s on colour is impressive, however, After having studied colour pretty extensively at an advance level, you know finding inspiration, the use of colour, which colours go with what, colour psychology, colour proportions etc etc etc... I feel that there is no book out there that could resolve your colour dilemas. Here are just some of the fundamental factors affecting a designers choice of colour, For example, we cannot see colour without light therefore you should consider the light levels entering the room. The size & shape of the room, here again colour can be used to visually alter the proportions of a room. Use of furniture, Certain fabrics, textures & surfaces absorb or reflect light, So black velvet in a dark room will absorb up to  95% of the light that hit it...    Without going into too much detail, no two rooms are exactly the same. I hope I'm not sounding negative but believe me, I've purchased many books from RIBA & it's more »

  • Quotes "?"

We've probably heard these quotes a million times over.  But here's another little reminder... "True friends are the ones who never leave your heart, even if they leave your life for a while. Even after years apart, you pick up with them right where you left off, and even if they die they're never dead in your heart.” “A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.” “A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” “The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.” “Friends are like bras: close to your heart and there for support.” ;-0

  • Global colour trends 2010

O.M.G... Just received my invitation (via the British Interior Design Association) to the all prestigious Global colour trends preview 2010,  The last time I stood in the presence of one of the "trends forecasters", the hairs on my hands stood up right.  These are the people who decide what COLOURS ARE HOT 'n HAPPENING not only within the interiors industry but also within the fashion industry!!! Fingers crossed.... I hope I get a chance to introduce myself to the industry experts...

  • Feature - Gallery magazine

Gallery magazine Jersey has done a 1 page feature on me to support local talent.  This is a free magazine and is currently Jersey's most read magazine.  It can be found at the trendiest hotels, restaurants, bars, shops etc.. Check it out on my profile but once uploaded its a bit difficult to read the text.  The feature reads: Jersey-based Jessica Lightbody, has been nominated on mydeco.com as a hot, new interior designer.  Their competition, One To Watch, which is open to students and recent graduates, sees Jessica currently listed third.  The best new designer voted for by the public, will win an internship with a leading international designer and the top ten will get their work in front of a panel of design heavyweights, including Sir Terence Conran, Philippe Starck, Marc Newson, Kelly Hoppen, Tara Bernard and Kirstie Allsopp. Jessica is graduating this summer and has just set up her new business, Designed Interiors.  She cites her influences as, "Global with a touch of timeless more »

  • Competition - Manufacturing contract

Great competition!!! I have just uploaded 1 of my sample boards.  There are two hand sketched and rendered vases I have designed.  They are slightly different in style and have an overall rustic, distressed look.  I have also designed lighting, accessories and a furniture collection (to accompany my new furniture designs concept board).  The overall style is leather on metal.  I will be uploading all  of my new designs towards the end of August.  I could actually upload them sooner but I'm waiting until I get some feedback from members of the Association for British Furniture Manufacturers.  I've been really fortunate to have a magazine do a feature on me regarding the mydeco competition and showing some of my new designs...   Hopefully I could get some votes from that...

  • Design approach!

As an interior designer it is vitally important to have a trained eye with meticulous attention to detail. I believe that designing is 90% calculated and only 10% inspiration.  There could be various underlying factors affecting the direction in which a designer takes for example: The architectural features of a building, geographical locations, ethnic diversity, feng shui, colour psychology (to either visually alter the proportions of a room or just to create a desired mood or atmosphere), your clients may want to inject their own unique preferred style or personality into the space or even a certain theme could be used. The list goes on & on... I cannot emphisize enough the importance of being flexible in your design approach & most importantly designing for your clients, afterall they will be living in that space. Another way of overcoming design or even inspiration dilema’s is to have a clear understanding of possibly 100’s of different styles from 16th century period to a modern more »
