  • Where to start?

College has started.... it's scary and weird. We are now the "old wise ones" in the studio, people ask us for advice. That feels strange indeeed since I have no idea what I'm doing myself. I feel very ambicious though, I want to work and I have started by getting ny hands dirty in the workshop making a chair for myself. Not because it has any relevance to my major project but to get my head in to gear. Next week I'll be doing the same in the metal workshop. That is my favourite place! I can't wait for it. Ok, time for some work on my dissertation, I have to do some serious work on that this week. My next blogpost will be confused, stressed and full of anxiety so.... til next time!

  • Dissertation time

I have started my dissertation, it's scary and big. As I have mentioned previously I am interested in gender stereotyping in design and intend to write about just that. I have a cold at the moment, it's making me feel sorry for myself and it's hard to focus on writing when one has to cough every ten seconds... yes, I'm miserable and pathetic. Does anyone know any books that handles these issues or maybe other ethical issues that designers are confronted with. I'm open for suggestions! Desperate for them actually....

  • Gender stereotypes in Design

Now here is a complicated question. When we use gender stereotypes as a base in design reseach we "create" it. When we make a pink mobile phone because the stereotypical image of women say that is what they want, that will make women buy it. We make the individual, in a consumerist society you are what you buy. You buy things to fit in to a group, when we create yet another consumer group to belong to of course people will join in.  Women are no different to men, but by segregating everything from toilets to mobile phones we are broadening the gap between the genders and this will only work against the struggle to become equal. I believe that it is a duty as designers to consider this and take a stance against it, we have a massive power in our hand, we shape the consumer goods in a consumerist society, but are we aware of the impact we have? All you out there that have an opinion about this, let me know what you think

  • Back from holliday?

Or am I? Was my trip back home to Sweden really a holliday? I had some wonderful time with my friends and family. But most of the time I was restless and felt stressed about coming back to College and all the work I have to do. Why is it so hard to relax when you actually have the time?  It makes our spare time useless, we spend all this money and still we sit there, by the pool or in our family home and worry, stress and can't relax... By the time the holliday is over you feel no better than before. silly that... I have found my ultimate way to relax, it's in a tent, in the middle of nowhere with good friends and hard work, as far away as one could come from a mobile phone and a laptop. I'm so happy to have found this retreat, but I wonder how many people do not have one...

  • furniture exhibition

Edinburgh College of Art is a wonderful place, there is so much support for us students. Now we are having a furniture exhibition, showing our armchairs that we designed during the year. The exhibition is in cooperation with Bute Fabrics that have provided the lovely upholstery. please, if you are in Edinburgh between 4th and 29th of August, come on in to Evolution house and take a look at our armchairs and maybe flick trough some Bute catalogues.

  • stressed!? who is stressed?! NOT ME!!!

haha, yes, that is what I keep telling myself. But I am very stressed, there is so much to do with this furniture exhibition. And everything else in life, work, tango and friends. It's interesting though, how when we get stressed we tend to take on even more, as if we are trying to keep ourselves so busy that we won't take a break and slow down. Is that so we won't loose momentum? Keep running because it takes more effort to speed up again from standing still? I don't know but it is a funny thing, right now I'm taking on whatever people ask me for. -"yes, of course, I'll help you paint your house" -" Don't worry, I'll do that for you" -" no, don't worry, I have PLENT time to go to manchester with you!" ............ yes, I'm stupid.....

  • to work or not to work...

I am hunting down every possible design employer  in Edinburgh at the moment. Hanging on the phone, emailing them and next step I guess will be to show up with my portfolio at the door. I'm feeling positive, something will turn up eventually! I felt incredibly depressed yesterday and a bit hopeless about the job situation but now that I have actually submitted some CV's and talked to some people, I feel that it can't possibly be as hard as it seems. I'm off to find the job of my dreams! bye bye!

  • Employment

It is proving difficult to find employment. Not at all hard to find work though.... lots of it around. Unfortunately my situation right now is unclear and diffuse. I have one job redesigning a flat, one as a teacher and maybe one project managing for a property developer... still, there is not enough work. They are all part time, VERY part time actually, just a day a week. I would love an internship with a designer so I can get some good quality work experience and good connections in the industry. I'll keep up the search

  • Midsummer!

Yes! It's almost here now, Midsummer.... this is a huge event in Sweden, competing with christmas to be the biggest thing of the year. But I'm stuck here.... so what is a poor Swedish girl to do on such a big occasion in the wrong country? Well, find a Swedish bar! And I did! there is loads of them here, a Swedish couple decided to move here and start a chain of Swedish bars and they are very sucsessful. I'm going to Sofie's tomorrow to dance, drink and sing! If you want a traditional Swedish midsummer, come to Sofie's in Edinburgh! I can't wait, this is going to be so much fun! I'll tell you everything about it on saturday.... no make that sunday.. :)
