  • Sudden Burst of Inspiration & Various Pet Tips

Hey mydeco-ers, I was feeling sort of a design rut for a bit- probably due to post-winter doldrums and falling sick for a couple of weeks.  Then last week I came sudden inspiration from the burst of Spring colors and the "One to Watch" contest!  There's nothing like Spring and a little competition to get things going.  I've come up with a concept for my new living room (finally!) that I posted in my 3-D rooms.  I am excited to continue on the real-life project now! On the subject of pets, I was thinking of some things that I thought may be useful to those of you who share your abode with furry creatures. Rugs are big fur-catchers, but I've found that the indoor-outdoor variety from Target or a Home improvement store work very well.  They usually have fairly cool designs and are very easy to clean.  Surprisingly, they are actually quite soft on the feet.  My dog sometimes sleeps on the rug instead of her bed! As for the cat scratching problem, I thought I was doomed when in reality I more »

  • A Question...

Hey everyone, I posted a question earlier, but now can't seem to find it, so I thought I would create a new blog post.  I wanted to get some feedback on a career change I am planning to interior design.  I actually have a background in fashion design and merchandising, and for the past ten years have been in the IT world- mainly software.  I am thinking getting some information on the certificate program at Parsons School of Design here in NY, and starting my own website for now- mainly to post projects I've done for friends, family, and myself. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Been a while...

Hey everyone, Well, it's been a while...and the apt project is slow going.  The IKEA couch is impossible- not enough time/ money to get a custom slipcover, so I've settled on working with the given color and fabric.  Found some great saffron-colored curtains from the Company Store here in the US.  I plan to start a new room in mydeco to get some ideas on the living area.  More pics to come too! Love this new Blog editor by the way!

  • These are the breaks...

Well, my apartment project got stalled for a bit due to finances.  Had to recover some from the move as well as manage some unplanned expenses, such as vet appointments, baby showers, etc.  No offense my lovely friends, but holy smokes- all of you are having little bundles of joy all at once!! As for the Vet- was just there today.  My girl Secret (doggie) now needs one of her choppers pulled.  Luckily I caught it in time- her poor tooth was infected!  She'll be going in to see the doc Monday, and will be good to go by Monday night. So, this weekend my main low-budget design goal is to: - Replace the trash bags on the living room windows with curtains (yes, trash bags...see exhibit A in my room photos) - Add an area rug to the living room - Slipcover the IKEA couch! Note: must get a sewing machine... I'm off on my search tomorrow...results to be posted here soon!

  • Stage 2

The trips to Target and IKEA were very fruitful...got a great indoor/ outdoor rug for the bedroom (you can see pics in my Room photos.)  Great for easy accident clean-up, and they are actually quite comfortable.  The rug itself is called Oriental Dreams- I believe it is licensed by Target, so I'm not sure of the availability. IKEA had this great, cheap starter sofa called the SOLSTA sofa bed.  (also can view pic in my Rooms.)  It's great for the price, comfortable if you like a firmer sofa, and the cushions fold out into a small bed!  My only complaint is that the color looked dark grey online and in the store, but when I took it out of the box, it appeared more drab navy.  So, I've added a slipcover to the old apartment list!!

  • Full steam ahead...

As a City Dweller (specifically, New York), one of the most common challenges I hear from felllow City folk is how to create a functional, stylish, budget-friendly space.  As an animal lover, I need to make the place pet friendly as well. This weekend begins my quest to find cheap, stylish furnishings for my new abode.  I plan to post the before and afters on my profile.  I'm headed to Target and IKEA first!  I may check out some used items on Craigslist.  I also have a bookcase (found curbside) that I need to paint- it's hunter green with country-kitchen style apples on the top.  Yikes! I will be sure to share any tips...and am open to any comments or tips from mydeco comrades. Cheers, Rachel
