  • Why minimalism is more

Why minimalism is more I just watched a repeat of last night’s Grand Designs, in which a property developer and his wife built their own home with a focus on prefabricated construction, flat-pack timber-framework and just-in-time delivery. My mind was so awash with buzzwords by the end of the programme that I had to lie down. Initially I was a little unimpressed with the design of the house: a huge white cube, in which very little stood. One side was an entirely glass wall and the interior was a series of layers, starting with an open lounge (with uber-cool suspended fireplace) and various mezzanine levels above. It just looked a little cold – a little too ‘photoshoot’ for my liking - and with all the rooms and activities of the household open to the world via the glass façade I felt it lacked the cosiness I wanted from a home of my own. Which got me thinking. What do I want from a home of my own? I’m reaching a stage in my life where I should more »

  • NY Times: Equal Opportunity Design

From the New York Times: really interesting article on how homeowners are being empowered to take greater control not just of their interiors, but of the the community in which they live in general: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/30/realestate/30njzo.html?_r=1&ex=1349236800&en=e476dc9fc55e39ef&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin JUST off the New York State Thruway, in the Orange County town of Woodbury, a developer called the Carteret Group is planning a single-family-home development that it is billing as “multigenerational.” The 450-house community, called Woodbury Junction, will offer 320 homes designed for families of any age, priced from the low $500,000s, and 130 homes designed for people 55 and over, at prices starting in the high $300,000s. It is not the only multifamily development in the region to set aside units as age-restricted — often to meet a requirement for lower-income housing. Yet no other is configured in quite the same way, said Barbara Kleger, an more »

  • Almost the weekend...

Almost the weekend now, and I can't wait. My parents are moving into their new home - an old countryhouse in Sussex. They've asked for my help in designing it and getting it into a live-able state: currently, there are a few problems that they need to sort. Other than that, it is of course the rugby tomorrow between England and Australia. I will be making an extra effort to ensure that I'm not shifting boxes or doing any kind of decorating during this time...!

  • Broken beds and broken dreams

Ugh, our bed broke today – not the way you think! – so it’s off to the internet land of furniture for me and using valuable holiday time waiting for the damn thing to get delivered. Fan Effing Tastic. (well, ok, it could be worse. At least I won’t have to go trawling around out-of-town shopping centres and complexes and face those smarmy salespeople.)
