    Hey

Although I have visited this site many times previously, I've only just registered.

I'm an Interior Design student from the North West of England.

I'm planning on creating a blog that I hope you find interesting to read, writing not only about my on-going - but also the fierce of often cut-throat business students have to wade through to try and find their break.

    So, I'll c u then

  • 13/11/2008 - Uni OVERLOAD

I know there are a few others on mydeco who are in their final years at Uni doing various art or design related degrees. I'm in my final year of an Interior Design degree, and I knew there would be alot of work, and I have been working hard, but can I just say, I HAVE GOT LOADS OF ****KING WORK STILL TO DO! At this rate, I'll be happy if I pass my degree, let alone go for the top gradings. Its at times like this you this you realise just how many crap books managed to get published also, about as interesting to read as it is to watch paint dry. However, I am going to say two books  I have read have been brilliant and very informative, and I am now an expert (to a partial extent) on tiles. 1000 Tiles is one book, and the other is called Fired Earth - 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe. Also, I must give a shout out to all those artists and craftsmen from the time of when Islam was spreading across North Africa, Middle East, Asia and eventually Spain. The tiled interiors are AMAZING, and more »

Hello, hope everybody reading this is well. There comes a time when you know you have to put your foot down and work, work, work. Anything else will result in dissapointment. I'm in my final year as I have said in previous blogs, and naturally, there is a MASSIVE amount of work to do. This semester I have 4 modules, Smart Building, Contemporary Issues, Project Management and a Design Theory Module. The Design Theory Module is a killer. We have until Dec 9 to hand in our research folders (which need to full of work and research). I really really wanted to get a First, but I think that I may end up with a 2:1..ntohing wrnog with it, but I had been wanting a First. I just hope I don't f*ck up and get less than a 2:1. My area of research for my design theory mod is Wall Coverings, and will eventually lead to me focusing on either Wallpaper, or Tiles..I visited the Graham and Brown printing studio in Blackburn the other week which was cool.. The funny thing is, next semester, I'll have more »

Hello! Time does indeed fly. I can remember like yesterday finishing my second year of Uni, and now next monday, I start my final year. Its exciting yet slightly daunting. Exciting because I love what I do, and I know I'll enjoy this year, even though there will be mountain ranges of work. But then, when its all done, I've got to find work. There isn't exactly lots of opportunities in Manchester at the minute, alot of the work is down south - namely London. I could move there, but blah. So, 100% Design was pretty good, got some cheap magazines, and a great deal on FRAME - the best interior design mag there is imo. There were some really interesting products on display, lots of inspiration. Whilst in London,  I also visted the studio of Norman Fosters Architects - AMAZING. The models especially, you can tell that many, many weeks have been spent on them. The 3ds max work they had on display was brilliant too. I'd work for him. Did anybody visit Sothebys to view the Damien Hirst work more »

Hello! Been an age since my last blog entry, it funny how much time I waste - actually, its not. Its pathetic. Good news: Some of my work will be in the upcoming issue of IDFX Magazine :D So, I'm approaching the final year of Uni, and have been thinking about what area I want to research into (eventually forming a long essay that counts for alot of marks)..and then this topic area should relate to the final design project I carry out. And...after much deliberation, I have chosen my topic to be.....TILES Ceramic Tiles, stone tiles, mosaics, leather...pattern, texture, colour...their creation..william de morgan, the ancient egyptians, greeks, romans and their use of tiles...different shapes, sizes, forms, uses, sculpture..mosaics, bisazza, fired earth..architectural uses...the things to look into are endless, so all the research will hopefully culminate in high marks - woo. So, if anybody has anything to suggest, recommend, or talk about anything relating to tiles, please do so :D Also more »

As some of you may have read on an earlier blog post, I entered a design competition a while back and was shortlisted. Following that, I had to complete the final stage of work (along with the other 5 shortlistees), and one would be chosen the winner and crowned Britains Best Emerging Interior Designer 2008. The results are going to be out on Friday - I'm pretty sure I'm not going to win, but one can still hope, lol. I have a work placement at long last! wooohooo! That should be cool. Also, if anybody is the Manchester area, and would like some free design work done, be it from schemes to bigger jobs, send me a message. i'm looking for a design project over the summer, so if I could help somebody it'd be great, or if not, i'll create my own brief and find a real building and work with that. Ronaldo will stay at Manchester United I've been working like 30 hours a week for the past 3 weeks and I'm shattered! blah. Hope everything is good, and lets hope you all find some great bargains more »

Uni is now over - wahey! (Well, until September anyway) Next year is my final year, and I keep thinking to myself, in 12 months time, I'm going to be looking for full-time employment. My education days are over - and in their place comes responsibility. ****! A few of my classmates and I have decided that for our final show next year we should put up an exhibition in Manchester City Centre, at a location that is easy to find and access for all the designers and architects from Manchester and the immediate surrounding around. This will prove a challenge as the course I'm on, as well as the Uni, is very new. Aside from the logistical aspect, we'll also be concentrating on our final years work which will give us our final marks. So, if you are the Manchester area, this time next year, you better be visiting our degree show!!! I'll post details at the time :D On Thursday,  I contacted 9 seperate firms to see if it was possible to do a Voluntary Work Placement at their practise' - 7 of more »

Its been exactly a month since my last update - so here it is, and leave a comment, you know you want to, Well, this past month has been hectic. Deadlines for Uni work, as well as working on a design competition I have been shortlisted for. Thankfully, all of this work is now complete, so it means I can relax for a while. I plan on doing some projects over the summer - more conceptual designs rather than those which could be applied at a relatively modest cost. I'm thinking of finding buildings that are designed well (good job Mr/Mrs Architect), but where the interior space is a shambles (...Architects hey). I'll re-design those areas so that are not only more visually exciting, but spaces that have a strong intellectual backing behind them which should give the spaces a WOW factor, rather than the 'white-walls' factor. I also want to work on my Photography, namely Interior Photography. Very difficult to understand to a point where you are producing quality shots with the right more »

Well, deadlines are fast approaching to hand in my work. Its wierd, I know I have x amount of time to do the work, but I'll always laze around for a day or two before really starting, and then find myself in a rush. If I had done some work on Monday, I would have been in a much more calm and chilled position, but instead, there is an element of rushing involved. A lesson learned for my 3rd and final year. I've got to do a presentation on Friday for a Church Community Centre project, as of now, I have 1.5 plans done out of 2. I am half way through making the CAD models of the interiors - so its not too bad. The problem comes with the printing as I've got to use the Plotter at Uni, and then the heat press machine, which means my deadline is a day shorter atleast.. Other than that, MANCHESTER UNITED are into the Champions League Final! YES! I am having no luck what so ever when it comes to finding a Work Placement for the summer..its imperative I find one in my opinion. Tibs

Well, the good news is I did receive some comments from my last blog entry - wahey. I dinf it annoying how seperate paragraphs don't walways appears on MyDeco - lets hope its fixed soon. So, still lots of work to do...I think one day I'll link some of my work on here so you can see what I've done, and tell me whether you think its good, or baaaaaaad. INTERIOR DESIGN  STUDENTS: Make yourself known! Are you in your 1st, 2nd or 3rd Year - or perhaps already graduated and working within the field? Finally: Who has been watching I Own Britains Best Home on Channel 5? Its not bad, some really nice houses on there. The woman who does the voice over on the show is the most annoying ever, and it wouldn't be a loss if she was replaced to be honest. My favourite house has got to be the one on the beach, but thats party (largely) down to the setting.

Well, I'm glad to say my last blog post recieved 195 views - not sure if 195 people actually read it though - however - not one single comment...booooo. So, I'm sitting here thinking to myself - SH*T - I've got a load of work to do..some of that work includes around 5 short essays to research and write - the topics include Charles Renee Mackintosh, Frank Gehry, Bauhaus, a small piece on Urbis, and ermm..a some other things that I currently can't remember. My tuesday, I hope to have done atleast FIVE essays, and completed some work I'm doing for a Community Centre (well, completed the design work for the kitchen, toilets and upstiars) Pray for me In other completely unrelated issues - who watches I Own Britains Best Home on Channel 5? They' vehad some really brilliant houses on there (note: houses not homes)...I'd love to live on a beach with huge glazed walls that could be completely removed for parties..or just when its a good day. Until next time PS: comment, Comment, COMMENT ;-)
