Mr Bo Jangles

So ridiculously pleased that my new friend Kitty has made a positive comment I return to the blog refreshed. Refreshment has been long and varied this weekend. Birthday boy, who is definitely more grown man than a boy, deserved a serious celebration so on Friday we set off for the serious heaven of Blakeney, Norfolk with Mr Bo Jangles in tow. On route we rescued London son and his Yorkshire girlfriend from a little station with plenty of signs but no obvious entrance. At this point we had to re jig the luggage and Mr Bo who had slobbered and rained on all his bedding. Feeling slightly guilty about the worried, sodden Mr Bo we lunched to excess with Nottingham son and friend at the Hoste Arms and the ever expanding party eventually landed in Blakeney. It is amazing how inventive you can be in one hotel bathroom. Mr Bo's bedding was washed in many tiny bottles of shampoo and hung to dry on the shower rail and then somehow London son's scarf and sweater joined the wash room as Mr Bo had more »

Full steam ahead...

As a City Dweller (specifically, New York), one of the most common challenges I hear from felllow City folk is how to create a functional, stylish, budget-friendly space.  As an animal lover, I need to make the place pet friendly as well. This weekend begins my quest to find cheap, stylish furnishings for my new abode.  I plan to post the before and afters on my profile.  I'm headed to Target and IKEA first!  I may check out some used items on Craigslist.  I also have a bookcase (found curbside) that I need to paint- it's hunter green with country-kitchen style apples on the top.  Yikes! I will be sure to share any tips...and am open to any comments or tips from mydeco comrades. Cheers, Rachel

why on earth am i doing this?

somebody asked why I am doing all this work? well apart from the obvious fancied a change/ increase house value etc this was actually all planned in 2005. even with drawings and estimates. and then my ex left for  a younger model and left me with about 25K debt blah blah blah. I had to keep going and keep the house or lose my future/ pension/ investments= so i filled it with foreign students and paid the debts and kept going. this is a long story cut v short btw. then I met a fabulous new man and eventually he moved in and said hey this is a great house and you should do it up,,,,,, and the rest is history so they say. Eternally garteful not just for his love and support but the opportunity to realise the dream of seeing this house made a home. And he loves it and is active in the design choices and hard graft. so here we are doing it together and looking to the future which a while ago I thought I could not do. we plan to stay here for afew  years and then sell and move more »

British and proud!!

If there is one thing that the world is lacking these days its good old British designed and manufactured furniture.  Does anyone actually want the furniture that they buy in from abroad at hugely discounted prices to last longer than an episode of Eastenders?  Cheap labour is killing our industry.  Bring back fabulously made furniture! When exhibiting at last months Interiors Birmingham show, I was amazed to see the lack of British born furniture, and even more amazed to hear so many people talk about it!  If you want to see some stunning British manufactered contemporary furniture visit www.isu-uk.com

Digital Biographer's Deft Design Decisions

Decided indecision in the kitchen

Home decoration, especially renovations, can be a fraught area when it comes to maintaining domestic bliss and calm. Often, the police reports eupemistically refer to such lively exchanges of opinion as "domestic situations". Also known as raging bloody rows. So I decided to compromise on my kitchen design. Yes, I'm just going for what my wife wants. And then making small alterations and suggestions... Which means I'm in charge of opening up the fireplace, which may be its 1905 state somewhere behind a lot of rubbish and bricks and an odd gas back-boiler contraption. I think a coal-effect gas fire, as we have in our lounge, (often mistaken for real fire) would be great, as there's nothing quite like real flame to bring the focus to the hearth... but most of the designs of fires I have seen are NAFF. I plan to be updating this blog with my design discoveries on the path to a nice fire and surround...

Less, but better

Beech is back

Back in 1960 the original finish of the 606 Universal Shelving System was beech with off-white. Braun and Rams had used this material combination for their seminal record players, most notably SK4 (Snow White's Coffin) in 1955. After a brief absence beech is once again available and at home at 72 Wigmore Street. Today you can combine it with black, silver or...off-white. Our beech is sourced from an FSC-managed forest.
