It is rare to find such an excellent example of traditional lacquered furniture outside of a specialist Chinese emporium. This lovely cabinet represents first-class workmanship. Hand-crafted from solid elm, it is decorated – also by hand - with painted butterfly and leaf motifs before the painstaking application of multiple layers of lacquer, creating a lustrous antiqued finish. It also features many other authentic details: a distinctive Chinese brass latch, for instance, and dowelled door hinges. In fact, there is so much individual craftsmanship, no two of these cabinets are precisely the same which adds to their unique character.
