Charlie Crowther-Smith
Charlie combines traditional building techniques and materials with a contemporary attitude to design

What's the ethos behind your brand?
I seek to create well crafted furniture that is all British made. I like my products to look a little bit different and have a unique feel to each individual piece. Wood is usually the main component in my furniture pieces, which is probably due to the fact that I trained as a cabinet-maker. I try and ensure that my products are made in a sustainable way and this is something I am increasingly giving more focus to both in the materials that I use and the processes that I employ.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I am inspired by the diverse and brilliant design talent that exists today, which always pushes me on to create the best work that I can.

How would you sum up your personal style in three words?
Modern mid-century.

Can you explain a little more about how you make your products?
My products start with an idea, this usually comes from sitting with a sketch book or computer and playing around with shapes and colour. Then I move into the workshop and start making models and mock-ups to see how something looks when you walk around it or sit at/sit on it. During this process you work out how the piece will fit together, what joints to use and what materials to work with. At this point an idea may return to the sketchpad and the process begins again. Once an idea is finalised it will then be made in the chosen materials, using the jigs that were created to engineer the mock-ups.
