mydeco.com in conversation with Judith, from Couch.
What is the ethos behind your brand?
Couch is the result of collaboration between husband and wife designers, Ian and Judy Archer. We specialise in upholstered furniture and the 'Couch' brand personifies British design and manufacturing skills, combining uniquely creative, high quality product at affordable prices.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Having spent our formative design years in very different environments – where we were exposed to both classical English furniture and Northern European minimalism design – our inspiration is wide and varied. Much time is spent visiting the major design fairs around the world, trawling vintage and antique markets absorbing past and current design trends, which are then distilled and re-constructed as quintessentially contemporary English furniture.
What is your most prized possession?
Ian’s drawings of our children. We also acquired some antique brass candlesticks and mirror that belonged to Ian's parents.
How would you sum up your personal style in one word?
Ian would say ‘Foppish’ and Judy’s style is ‘Utilitarian’.
Can you explain a little more about how you make your products?
Ian designs the furniture and Judith either designs or sources the fabrics. All of Couch's upholstery is made in the UK to exacting standards. With more then 20 years experience, Ian utilises the best of traditional and contemporary manufacturing techniques and materials to create a variety of exciting shapes. Fundamental to each piece is its quality and comfort. Whether it is a lounging sofa or a formal reading chair, the materials and construction are engineered to fit the purpose.
What would you say is your hero product?
'Tango' is fast becoming our most successful product yet.
