Erica Wakerly
Wallpapers that enhance the experience of an interior space, through metallic designs.

mydeco.com in conversation with Erica.

Each of your designs are striking in their own right, but would you say there was an overarching theme that you work to when designing?
I design for the space and light of a room. My designs are intended to be functional by enhancing the experience of an interior space not just to decorate the walls. This is particularly true with my metallic designs, as they reflect the changing ambient light. On an overcast day the space can still feel bright and clean and at night the walls will delicately reflect the warm glow of a candle creating a more intimate experience.

What decided the move from illustration to interiors?
It was an indirect move; I studied BA illustration and then worked as a professional graphic designer before enrolling at the RCA MA Printed Textiles. It was here that both my illustration and graphic design experience naturally combined in my print and textile work.

Which piece is your personal favourite and why?
I have the most affection for Angles as this was the first metallic design that I launched and it felt radical and beautiful at a time and it still feels fresh every time I see it hung.

What has your most exciting commission been?
This year I was invited to design a fabric piece for the Wallpaper* handmade exhibition in Milan. It was a one off textile panel to work with the beautiful History chair designed by Joseph Walsh and Design Partners in Ireland.
I am also very excited every time I see a new design printed for the first time. My papers are produced on machines over a hundred years old and as tall as a house, just to see these magnificent machines in action is a thrill.

What is the ethos behind your brand?
The modernist principle of form follows function, even in decoration and this is the secret of all timeless design.
