Kristjana S Williams Studio
A magically enchanting mix of colour, subject and form.

mydeco.com in conversation with Kristjana S Williams.

What's the ethos behind your brand?
The three values I stand by are creativity, craft and innovation, whilst working with incredible crafts people to create visual treats.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Nature on nature; the symmetry that lies in all living things. Growing up in Iceland has been the real inspiration for my work. When I was growing up I found nature there stark and unforgiving; I never saw trees or colourful butterflies or wild flowers – everything seemed grey. Now I feel the complete opposite, the colours and the landscape are like nowhere else in the world.

How would you sum up your personal style in one word?
Eclectic.

Can you explain a little more about how you make your products?
The globe is made in the time-honoured manner of applying 12 printed gores to a sphere, the same way it has been done since 1507. The base is made from reclaimed timber and the finial is a salvaged chess piece that has played its part in numerous battles and is now taking a well deserved rest, both of which certifying the product's sustainability.

What would you say is your hero product?
I would say the Map of the World print. My work is essentially hundreds and often thousands of layers of collage. Each project starts with trips to museums, art reference libraries, collecting found items, picture taking and sketching - building up and constructing the image and individual elements.
