Clever lighting can transform the ambience in your home. Sarah Beeny, TV presenter and founder of property website Tepilo.com, shares her advice on how to make lighting effective in your rooms. Take tips from a pro and read what Beeny has to say about borrowing light...

Before you change your lighting, think about ways to take as much natural light as you can from other sources.

Put fanlights over doors, glass panels in doors, or build glazed walls to direct light into a dark central area.

In basements or living rooms, borrow light from the floors above through light wells or sandblasted glass panels in the ceiling, or try putting in sun tunnels, ducted tunnels with mirrors to bounce light into a room (the shorter the tunnel with fewer bends, the stronger the light).

But be aware that this is natural light and you will also need to block this out, especially in bedrooms (moonlight shining through a sun tunnel can be uncomfortably bright? Shutters, curtains or blinds will work just fine.
