Philippe Starck has crowned the the winner of the Pure Creativity competition. Taking home the prize is Roland Kreiter from Germany for his Core2 Lemon Press design.

The competition, run by mydeco in collaboration with MGX and Philippe Starck, offered 3D Design students between the age of 18–25 the opportunity to create an innovative, intelligent and practical object, inspired by the new opportunities created by 3–dimensional stereo lithographic technology.

And the prize? Every designer's dream: to have his/her design made into a prototype using the stereolithographic process with MGX.

Not only will Roland Kreiter's lemon press design become a reality, but the lucky young designer got to meet Philippe Starck himself in his Paris studio and be interviewed for a joint article to be published in IDFX magazine.

Not only has he seen his creation come to life, but whilst sitting in Starck's studio, Philippe actually got Alberto Alessi to say ‘Alberto, you should be making this.’ I'm surprised the guy didn't fall off his chair!

Background to the competition

The idea for Pure Creativity was born when the design team at mydeco were chatting with Philippe Starck at his Paris office. We were all hugely excited about the new possibilities of 3D printing, and saw this competition as a unique chance to break the current boundaries of design and creativity. Most importantly, we wanted to give young talent the opportunity to explore new ways of thinking and making.

Competition entrants were asked to create a model using 3D software and submit their design on their mydeco profile. The finalists were then selected by Philippe Starck himself, Naomi Kaempfer (Head of MGX) and the design team at mydeco.

The short–listed designers were invited to visit the MGX factory in Leuven, Belgium, and met with a Starck Network designer. There they had the chance to experiment with revolutionary technologies and meet the MGX technical team to discuss their designs for optimisation using Magics software. Following the visit, finalists had a month to modify and improve their designs. See the thirteen finalists' designs here.

But there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Roland Kreiter!
