Eco-warrior Oliver Heath practises what he preaches. Since winning Young Designer of the Year in 1998, the former Changing Rooms presenter has been on a mission to spread the word that eco can most certainly be chic.

I live in... a small, refurbished 1850 Victorian terrace house in Brighton. In order to make it more environmentally friendly, it has been insulated with a sheepswool loft installation. I have fitted all of the windows that are not listed, with double glazing. Those that are listed have been refurbished to cut back on drafts.

My desire to be eco was born because... my childhood was spent in Brighton running around the Downs and swimming in the sea. I love nature. Memories of my youth combined with my architectural knowledge prompted me to want to help the environment.

My aim is... to combine nature and design. I create designs that are environmentally friendly without trying to shut out nature.

Most important to remember is... that there are functional and aesthetic things to do in your house to make it more environmentally friendly.

People don't realise that... there is no need to compromise your sense of style and design in order to be green.

My eco recommendation is... sustainable recycled materials – my kitchen surfaces are made of 85% crushed recycled glass. I use a low energy LED lighting system, a high efficiency boiler and all our house appliances are A-rated. I have installed recycled rubber flooring and recycled wood and plastic decking in the outdoor patio.

We need to... work with nature and consider it carefully. A lot of contemporary design pushes nature aside. Ultimately, it is the setting of the house. By using natural materials in the house, it gives a good grounding quality.

My greatest achievement is... to keep working in a field that I believe is right. I am promoting design ideas that make a difference to the environment and creating better, healthier homes.

We can all help... without spending a fortune. Change light bulbs for low energy, long life light bulbs. Halogen can be replaced with LED bulbs which last 50,000 hours longer and use a tenth of the energy.

My most thrilling gadget is... a wireless electrosave meter which clicks onto your electricity meter. It tells you how much electricity you are using in your house - particularly useful if you tend to leave TVs on standby. Unlike a dripping tap, which you can hear, electricity can be whirring without your knowledge.

My favorite piece of furniture is... the hinged, fold down picnic table on my balcony outside my kitchen. I built it a couple of years ago out of old recycled scaffold boards. Nothing beats breakfast outside during the summer.

The next big trend is... mismatched interiors making life less formal. People are starting to use a mixture of chairs around a dining table to give a more relaxed feeling. It creates a personalised style adding a richness to your home. Each chair brings its own character to the room.

I don’t like to... jump on the latest trends. As an environmental designer, I am very keen for products to be durable so I don’t abide by seasonal trends. I follow good design and hope to reduce waste produced.

What soothes me... at the end of the working day, after being glued to a computer, I need to feel real materials under my feet. Not only does it reduce the amount of toxins in your home but it also brings you – quite literally – back down to earth.
