The Turner Prize exhibition (6 October 2009 – 3 January 2010) is gauranteed to spark heated debates and strong opinions. With this in mind, we take a look at the style trends of 2009 which have divided our opinion. Which interior styles make your blood boil?

1. Eighties groove: Brighter than bright

For neon narcissists, the Eighties comeback is way more bodacious than hellacious – as the cool kids on the block would have said. Are you undecided? Look to Heal's Autumn/ Winter 09 collection which is filled with tactile and brightly coloured goodies. Sample the Eighties trend by introducing accessories and statement pieces, such as cushions, vases, a chair or lighting. If you're not brave enough to go really bold, this flocked hot pink chandelier (£750) from Heal's might be a bit much for you. But if you like your colour bright you'll be first in the queue.

  • Gold sequin tiger cushion

    2. Animal prints – wild or weird?

Even though it's never quite shaken off its tacky Bet Lynch medallion, animal prints are always crawling back into fashion. If you're a fan you're going to love this gold sequin tiger cushion (£22) by Julien Macdonald at Debenhams. But if the thought of animal print brings you out in a cold sweat, we certainly won't judge you.

  • Union Jack Throw

    3. Union Jack or Union flack?

Like Prince William's ever–increasing bald patch, the Union Jack takeover is one style trend that can't be ignored. Literally everything has been given the Union Jack makeover this year, from chairs to light switch covers (we said everything...). This Union Jack throw (£212.50) from Graham and Green is very patriotic. Are we still waving the flag? Well, one's arm may need a corgi–nap soon...

  • Dream Velvet Armchair

    4. Velvet – no longer underground

Who'd have thought it? Velvet is back this year – and it's 100% sophisticated and sexy too. Out are the comparisons with Granny's curtains of yesteryear and in are the tactile cushions, sofas and chairs in beautiful jewel colours. Love this Jamie dream velvet armchair (£1,195) in midnight blue, aubergine, purple, mink or raspberry from Graham and Green. For more luscious tactile treats, look at our top ten velvet. Don't think you're a fan? One word: embrace.

  • Daphne Coffee Table Teal Blue by Johnny Egg

    5. Flock off

Flocking is kitsch, unusual and, in Johnny Egg's neon colours at Heal's, very bold and lively. However, we can't help but wonder if it's too this year and not enough next year. Fashion is a home's best friend but so is durability. After all, furniture is for living with, not for a holiday. Even so, for unique statement furniture you don't have to look any further than Mr Egg. His flocked Daphne coffee table (£595) from Heal's can holiday at my home anyday.

  • Rose Cushion

    6. Cath Kidston splits the crowd

You can't go one trip on the tube without having a Cath Kidston floral print shopping bag bash you on the head on the escalator. The iconic floral prints are one style that consistantly divides opinion. Die–hard romantics cover their houses in the cheerful 1950's style prints while urban minimalists shudder at the thought. Which side are you on?

  • Red Turned Wood Table Lamp

    7. Turned on

It's not just the Eighties that are making a comeback – Seventies–style turned wood lamp bases are back on the table in all their curvaceous glory. Combine a love for colour and turned wood with Graham and Green's turned wood lamp (£179).

  • Flocked Phone Indigo by Johnny Egg

    8. When you're feeling blue...

Huge in the Spring Collections this year, cobalt blue rocked the catwalk and in the home with the eighties resurgence this autumn. If your somewhat (too) honest mother once told you that cobalt blue makes your waist look wide, you may not be the biggest fan... thanks mum. But the brilliant high street/ designer collaboration between Heal's and Johnny Egg should sway you – try this Flocked blue phone (£85) for size.

  • Coco Wallpaper

    9. Wallpaper: headaches or heartache?

Wallpaper has undergone a massive revival this year, no more so than statement wallpaper. Even so, this exciting and quirky trend started to peel off us in rolls when every alcove and bedside wall acquired their 'unique statement'. Having said that, it's still going strong and it does jazz up a room like nothing else. There's a huge variety – flock, photo, floral, feature... This bold and playful Coco wallpaper (£55) by Kuboaa will either provoke headaches or heartache... you decide.

  • Multi-coloured peacock sequin cushion

    10. Sequins to incite debate

A favourite with homemade dance costumes and school plays, sequins can be grown–up too. If you love it, the multi–coloured Peacock sequin cushion (£20) from Debenhams rivals the sparkle of a Times Square Christmas tree. Or are you more of a subtle patridge than a flamboyant peacock? Plum bedlinen with sequin detail (£12, also from Debenhams) embraces the colour of the season with understated sparkle.

I am completely over Cath Kidston. It looks dated now...and not in the way it is meant to.
