Eco: The green benefits of the credit crunch

Following another turbulent day on the world's stock markets, many businesses in the UK could be forgiven for feeling pretty uneasy at the moment.

The prospect of collapse is growing ever more likely for a number of firms, leaving office workers faced with the reality of losing their jobs and placing the contents of their desks into boxes.

But what becomes of the furniture that is left behind? Will it be confined to the rubbish dump?

Not necessarily, thanks to an eco-friendly company which understands the potential of second-hand officeware.

Founded in 2000, Green Works seeks to prevent furniture from being consigned to a landfill and instead puts it to good use.

It provides a service which enables third sector organisations to get their hands on some much-needed, decent office furniture - without having to trawl charity shops or auctions for second-hand bargains.

So far, more than 5,000 schools, charities, small businesses and other firms have benefited from the schemes operated by Green Works.

It seems like the credit crunch may have some benefits after all.
