Gardening: Christmas Poinsettias proving popular

Many gardeners have been forced to cut back their spending as if it were an over-grown rose bush this year.

But with Christmas fast approaching, it appears that one thing green-fingered enthusiasts absolutely refuse to give up on is the poinsettia.

According to gardening expert Stephen Lacey, demand for the festive red plant among gardeners and revelers decorating their homes this winter is as high as it was last year.

Writing in The Telegraph, he explained that the cheerful red plants had once been considered 'the height of horticultural vulgarity', but now adorn the gardens and windowsills of even the finest stately homes.

This transformation in perceptions was attributed to the creation of better specimens by nurseries and the attractive price tags that usually accompany poinsettias, whether they are deep red, pink or white.

Mr Lacey urged gardeners to try out a poinsettia this Christmas if they've not done so before, suggesting: 'Put it in a nice warm, bright spot, keep it watered, sing carols around it.'

Good advice for a jolly red Christmas!
