The first furniture auction devoted entirely to gothic pieces in more than a decade is set to take place in London today (July 15th).
According to The Financial Times, an auction by Bonhams in London's trendy Knightsbridge district could suggest that the time is right for another revival in the bold and daring style.
The last time that gothic features were in vogue was the beginning of the 19th century, when designers in all disciplines came to be influenced by the style that was most clearly elaborated in the construction of the Palace of Westminster.
'Since then, gothic revival furniture has largely been regarded as too big and brazen, too dark and heavy for modern interiors,' the newspaper suggested.
However, it pointed to the fact that the Bonhams auction includes a number of smaller items, including brass candlestick holders and stained-glass panels.
Meanwhile, with The Independent intimating that contemporary designers are falling back in love with baroque stylings, it could be the case that big, bold and beautiful furniture pieces will take centre stage over the coming months in reaction to the relative modesty of last year's designs.
