Goldsmiths students design 'sexy' internet routers

Students from Goldsmiths, University of London, have teamed up with internet service provider TalkTalk to create a range of 'sexy' internet router concepts.

Now a staple of almost every internet-connected household, the humble router provides an important function - connecting PCs, laptops and consumer electricals to the world wide web.

However, most routers are far from pleasing on the eye and are usually hidden away on the floor under desks or beds - something that the Routers of the Future project intends to rectify.

The designs submitted by students varied from the stylish and contemporary to the downright bizarre.

Aimed as a 'practical addition' to people's homes, the Hybrid Router is integrated into a retro 60's revival style hardwood side table, while Route O' Clock looks like a timepiece and provides a visual representation of internet connection speed.

One of the strangest designs on show was the Jellyfish, a sci-fi router that takes the form of the underwater creature and is striking enough to occupy the centre of any room.

'This is our craziest design and we were given full creative license,' said the Goldsmiths team.

'We wanted to place the router at the centre of the community, at the heart of the house.'
