Homeowners 'should not fight the period influence'

Anyone considering adding a coat of paint to their rooms should take time to consider whether the colour fits in with the era their property was designed.

Adele Roche of General Paints told The Irish Times that people are getting more savvy when it comes to matching styles up with different historical periods and as such, are getting braver with their colour palettes.

For those who are unsure regarding what colour to choose, the expert suggested adding vibrant feature walls in shades like purple to modern homes. Meanwhile, Georgian and Victorian houses with higher ceilings would look great when painted in muted shades of olive and dusky pink.

Irish Times homes writer Isabel Morton agreed that colour should be carefully considered, particularly in older homes, as many people began to ignore the influence in their haste to copy trends.

'Whatever possessed us to believe that we could reinvent the colour wheel?,' she commented.

For modern feature walls, berry shades such as cassis could be a good choice, as they are particularly hot colours at present.
