Kitchens 'should be exciting, lovely places'

Although kitchens have been evolving into one of the most important rooms in the modern home, people are still not making them exciting enough.

Jill Dupleix, writing for The Sydney Morning Herald, said she is pleased to see homeowners getting more savvy when it comes to storage, for example, opting for deep drawers instead of cupboards and adding extra room for recycling spaces.

However, she suggested that people may be scared to add the personal touch when it comes to furnishings because they are used to magazines showing clinical, white spaces.

'We are missing out on making our kitchens really exciting, lovely places,' Ms Dupleix commented.

She recommended putting attractive ingredients out to please the eye, or displaying vases and other pretty items to make the kitchen a "thing of beauty or whimsy, a joy to walk into".
