Does designer furniture define the middle classes?

Pinpointing exactly what makes the middle classes who they are is a difficult and often controversial endeavour.

But at the risk of inciting ire, author Christian Lander has dipped his toe in the middle class pool to come up with some startling – and controversial – insights.

Alongside hummus, farmers' markets and recycling, Mr Lander claims designer furniture is what makes the middle classes who they are.

Mr Lander claimed that Architects like Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier are popular because they have inspired so many modern collections - such as Ikea's, which put modern design in most people's price bracket.

However, he adds that the middle classes will do whatever it takes to secure an authentic piece of furniture from a leading designer – no matter what the cost.

Recently, Jim Currie of Edinburgh-based Retrospective echoed this final sentiment.

He told The Scotsman that the one thing people are really interested in at the moment is "quality pieces that will last, at an affordable price".
