At home with... Philippe Starck

Ecologically-minded: Starck says being green is only humane
Philippe Starck

Perhaps the most creative and multi-talented designer and creator of our times, Philippe Starck is co-chairman of the mydeco Design Board. We are honoured to have him on our team. A passionate eco-warrior, he is always first to make products aesthetically unique. He talks exclusively with mydeco on ecology, democratic design and the art of sex.

Today, the way you design is almost a vote... if you vote against ecology, that means a vote against humanity.

As a designer... or as just a citizen of this world, we have a duty to ourselves to be involved and concerned by ecology. Designers have more responsibility because they are producers of projects, objects and materialism.

Amongst other things, it is actually an obscenity to... kill cows to put on your sofa. Horrible people even put leather on their walls or on the floor. We must be very conscious of all these things. It is important to keep trees where they are.

Many products only exist to showcase wealth... but to buy a product just to show one's money is socially vulgar. It’s against any sort of humanity. When you do that, it's to try to oppress your neighbour. That is negative value.

Political design is... the heart of the issue. It fits in with the big picture of society, civilisation and evolution. Every project that wants the right to exist must fit in this bigger image of evolution.

Almost 90% of industry products today... are mainly male and macho. Almost every product tries to show speed, power and aggression. One company was stupid enough to have advertising about their product (a razor) reading ‘beautiful like a weapon’. Who today is stupid enough to want a product that is ‘beautiful like a weapon’ when you know that real weapons kill thousands and thousands of people every day?

We must refuse to... use any products which could be food. It’s absolutely not ethical to use something that people can eat when there are so many people who cannot eat.

As far as sex goes... there are strictly no products designed specialising in it. When you go to the movie theatre, watch TV or open a magazine, sex is everywhere. And strangely, there is nothing about sex in what you see in your home – except for the sex stories that you hide under your bed.

Sex should be... very important. I hope it's something you do one or two times a day. It’s like eating; when you eat, you go to the kitchen and a lot of products specialise in that. But for sex, there is strictly nothing. It’s like our whole life is without sex.

For the first time in history and to great success, we have... worked with Cassina for our privé collection. We have mainly, through metaphor, given some sexual ergonomics to designs which will also look acceptable to your guests. If you go into a good sex shop, you will find one or two but it is difficult to present them to your mother.

Privé by Starck for Cassina line furniture collection... tries to help the comfort of women and the competence of men.

In design, it's not just a question of... style and trend. It is mainly concept, service and function and that shows that a lot of function and territory has been completely deserted by design.

mydeco is...the final battle of democratic design. It will be the tool to give opportunities to anybody to find the right product at the right price in an easy way. That will definitively raise the quality, lower the price, make all the design affordable and kill the last trace of elitism.

his sex furniture is a brilliant idea, i cant think of any reason why there is not more incentive to design around such a fun and necessary part of our lives.
