Nautical style ideas

Summer – forever nautical

With summer fast approaching, our thoughts are drifting to all things nautical. Ay for sunny days, the wind in our hair, whizzing along the coast. Bring a touch of the seaside into your home with these stylish additions. Ahoy there matey.

1. Sail away

Head to the coast by adding a stripey accent to an otherwise plain palette of whites and blues for that quintessentially seaside look. Bring in the cool sea breeze with this Pembrook stripe box cushion (£20) from The White Company. The look is smart and classic, so won't go out of date. 'Why not overhaul your old deck chairs with some fab Striped canvas deckchair fabric?' suggests Pia Munden, design manager of mydeco. 'It's perfect for taking to the beach or just sitting in your garden'

  • SewSister's Award Winning Dolls - Maddy

    2. Drifting along

Get relaxed seaside style with handmade driftwood accessories. This pretty driftwood and shell heart (£68) from Not on the High Street evokes childhood memories of beachcombing and shell collecting.

  • 2. Soft shades

'Bring the sea shades into your interior with tonal blues and greens with chalk white.' Advises Munden, 'Use natural chalky paints to get that soft, slightly sun bleached look.' A collection of bottles and vases such as this green ceramic bottle vase (£14.95) from Dwell would look great on any mantle piece or side table.

  • Nautical Bedroom Bunting

    3. Flag it up

Nautical doesn't have to be just blue and white. Bring fun into a kid's bedroom with this quirky nautical bunting (£16) from Great Little Trading Company, perfect for little seafarers or dreamers alike.

  • Nautical Lantern - String

    5. Light up

Often adding a hint of a trend is stronger and more stylish than doing a complete image overhaul. This Nautical lantern (£15), inspired by old fashioned sea lanterns, from Garden Trading is stylish and sleek.

  • Captain Swivel chair

    6. Captain of your house

Head of the ship? This Leather swivel captain chair (£539) from Darlings of Chelsea makes an ideal office chair, perfect for sitting back and smoking a pipe in. And it comes with a five year warranty. Bonus.

  • Rope Knot Doorstop

    7. Feeling Ropey?

Consider the use of materials – thick rope and wicker evokes a sea side mood so try accessorizing your home with this rope knot dorstop (£29.50) from Aspen and Brown or these Laura Ashley rope tiebacks (£9.60) for a quick and easy update.

  • Fair Trade Eco Fundu Wood Photo Frame

    8. Picture that

'Don't go over the top with your nautical theme or it can end up being contrived,' warns Munden. 'Avoid rows of badly drawn pictures of boats. Instead think of beautiful prints of fish framed in natural wood frames with cream, red or navy blue mounts to take nautical to a glamorous level.' This Fair-trade eco fundu wood photo frame (£14.95) from Not on the High Street is charming.

  • Wall-Map Of The World, C. 1696

    9. Map it out

Frame a beautiful map to inspire thoughts of adventure on the high seas. This World Map (£30.17) drawn c.1696 will not only look gorgeous on your wall, but is a history lesson in it's own right too!

  • 10. Treasure chest

Get that stow-away look by using a rustic chest or trunk such as this fabulous Buzby trunk (£122) from Artisanti as a coffee table or for storage at the end of your bed.

my kids would love to have a room like this (more now that we just came back from a few days in the beach and they are all for the nautical look)... I'll try something like this for them
