Create the perfect bedroom for sex or sleep

Cliché it may sound, but the bedroom is still the destination of choice for a top night in. In a bid to get you in the mood (be it frisky or snoozy), mydeco invited the nation to tell us about their boudoir habits and preferences. We bring you the results of our national survey on sex and sleep.

Get the right combo

When scouting for a potential partner, drop the following questions into conversation: do they sleep in the foetal position? (they're insecure), in the middle of the bed? (you're going to get bashed about in the night), or have fleece sheets? (don't count on getting any action).

People who rated their sex as good or excellent opt for silk sheets (they're in touch with their sensuality), memory foam pillows (pricey, but they're willing to splash out on quality) and waterbeds (enough said).

For a good night's kip, our survey says you should try comfy pyjamas (they'll remind you of younger days), a kingsize sprung mattress (big enough to enjoy the coveted starfish position) and keeping a diary of the day's activities (to relieve your mind of stress). Here's the best of the rest...

Soft hues will promote sleep

Colours to make you blush

You might be surprised to learn your bedroom prowess can be determined by the colour of your walls (in your partner's eyes, anyway). Orange will see potential suitors sprinting back to past lovers, while a childish pink will immediately turn-off any man worth his testosterone. It is, however, the colour of choice for a room that promotes safety, comfort and a good night's sleep. Whatever tickles your fancy.

For fiery nights, scarlet walls (or a rouge bed throw) will get them raging like a red rag to a bull. The rebellion and passion you demonstrate with your paintbrush apparently indicates your adventurous potential in the sack. We'll refrain from alluding to the size of your paintbrush.

You snooze, you lose

Warning to students (and infantile elders) keen to snare a young professional: that cramped single mattress is doing you no favours. Either selfishly youthful or glaringly cheap, the message is far from sexy. Treat yourself to a gorgeous new bed and watch your luck change. But read our guide on buying the perfect mattress first.

Satin - sexy or sleazy?

Perhaps surprisingly, silk flat sheets are the ultimate aid to relaxation. They cool the body and maintain an even body temperature through the night. That said, there's no shaking their somewhat dubious reputation. For quality and style, satin sheets are the preferred alternative for getting hot under the collar.

Pillow fight

Only the very blessed fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow. Insomniacs should bin cheap synthetic filled pillows and buy a down feather pillow which is actually not as expensive as it sounds. Super-soft and fluffy, they will help you unwind. Oh so essential for good sex and sleep.

Sensitive souls will appreciate a hypo-allergenic pillow. Indulging in a feel-good product is the ultimate way to get revved up for sex, or wind down for some shut-eye. Spoil yourself.
