Londoners get two weeks less to enjoy their homes

Londoners pay more for their pads, but get to spend the least amount of time in them

LONDON, UK (3 September, 2009) – Londoners may pay more for their homes but according to research out today from the UK’s leading furniture shopping site mydeco.com, they spend an average of 13.5 days less in them a year compared to the rest of the UK – a total equal to half the average yearly holiday allocation.

The website wanted to uncover how Londoners use their homes and found the average time for Londoners to leave home in the morning is 7.55am, half an hour earlier than the national average of 8.25am. The average time to get home is 7.15pm, 45 minutes later that the national average of 6.30pm. This totals 6 hours 15 minutes per week, equal to the time it takes to watch 12 and a half episodes of Eastenders or run 36 baths. Over a course of a year, this totals 13.5 days.

Michelle Saxby from mydeco .com said, “Londoners pay so much for their homes so we need to make the most of them! A home should be a sanctuary where we want to spend time not just a place to grab a quick meal and a few hours sleep. To make the most of your home it’s essential the space works for you and makes you feel happy. The mydeco 3D room design tools are free to use so you can experiment with different ideas and find the inspiration to create a home you want to hang out in!”

It’s clear Londoners are house proud and love showing off their homes to others, because when it comes to entertaining we want to be in control with over three quarters (79%)preferring to be the host in our own homes rather than a guest in someone else’s home – the preferred choice of only a fifth (20%).

The site also found when it comes to the one luxury items Londoners would love to add to their homes, majority of female Londoners (45%) hanker after a huge ‘Sex in the City’ style walk-in wardrobe and dressing room the most, whilst for men it was a state of the art gym (39%).

When asked which more functional features Londoners would most like to add to their homes, a garden or bigger outdoor space was the top choice (46%), followed by more entertaining space (25%) and an additional bedroom (21%).
