1. Combine with a living space

It's really tricky to make a multi–purpose room work without it all becoming chaotic. However, if you invest in enough storage – or at least a desk with some storage – you should be able to keep it all under control, with regular clear outs.

2. Divide the space

You could use a shelving unit as a room divide to screen the desk area from the rest of the room. However, this is something for large, open spaces – put it in a small or average sized room and you'll feel overwhelmed.

3. Keep it minimal

In a tight office, like an attic space, keep the room as underfurnished as possible – paying attention to clever storage systems and a desk that won't crowd the space.

4. Up your storage

Getting a well–planned storage system for your office is an absolute must, so don't stint on it.

5. Hide it away

If your home is small or if you only need a work space occasionally, it makes sense to get a company (or a joiner) to create a unit that's completely hidden away. Painting the front of the unit white will make it blend away so that the room feels as large as possible.

6. Go for glass

A glass desk is less visually bulky, so it's a good choice for small spaces or rooms that double up as living areas.

7. Go retro

Choosing retro look furniture will give your office a stylish feel. Keep colours within the room calming – greens, soft browns, pale blues all help keep a busy space soothing.

8. Give yourself a view

Putting a desk in wasted space, such as at the top of the stairs, is a good idea in a house that lacks sufficient room. However, try to pick a space that's light and bright. It will be easier to work in and feel larger than if it's dark and enclosed.

9. Invest in blinds

It's important that an office space doesn’t get too hot or that the light isn't too bright. So, buy blinds that will keep direct sunlight out, while still allowing daylight in.

10. Go for pale shades

In a small space, pale wall colours and a light, reflective surface for the desk will help it feel larger. You can add colour and contrast with window dressings.
