[Design Democracy] means what some years ago might have seemed impossible, to enjoy of a beautiful place to call home - in a budget. To come back from work and be happy to be back because one actually enjoys being at home, because this home is what you made of it.

I feel there is no real definition [for Design Democracy] but it is being able to communicate your design ideas and actions in a totally liberal manner. Design your house how you want, express your opinions and share your inspirations, this is what Design Democracy is about.

Now I’m not a designer. Or even an interior designer. I’m just someone who likes pretty, practical things. I like colour and fun. Junk furniture and bargain buys. I like what I think is cool, not what I’ve been told is. So my opinions on design are just that… my opinions. And that’s what I think design democracy is.

Overall, I feel it's the freedom to freely communicate your personality through design. With so much inspiration out there, whether its books, magazines, TV or online it's hard sometimes to commit to a style. One day I like contemporary, the next day I like vintage. But does it really matter? We now have the freedom to stick it all together and say 'this is me'.

For me, design democracy is all about being honest with myself about what I love, what I like and what I want to see in my home. It might be an antique lamp perched on an Ikea unit, it might be a flea market trinket next to a papier mache model made by my child, next to the latest hip poster. Design democracy is about what is right for me, and for you, to design your space however we like it. No pressure. No rules. Just the people.

Democracy puts power in the hands of the people, free from dictatorial rule and persecution. The idea of a ‘Design Democracy’ to me, suggests an opportunity for people to creatively express themselves through design, without oppression.

Hmmm what does design democracy mean to me? I never asked myself that before but I guess, the freedom to design, create and inspire no matter who you offend or how much approval you receive. Design democracy leaves the door open to shock and to please. What angers some elates others.

  • Pippa Jameson Interiors

    Pippa Jameson Interiors

[Design Democracy] means that ultimately we all have the freedom and right to design and decorate in a fashion that suits ourselves without having to conform to a particular look or style. Everyone looks to creative bodies for design advice, guidance and inspiration and may even copy an exact style to reproduce in their home. So even though we have the freedom to design what we like some still choose to conform, but the difference is, it is their choice.

Being a blogger, I know first hand what democracy means in terms of creativity. I love to write about and share great design, beautiful objects, impressive new talent. Blogging enables you to easily be able to source and research these things. You don't have to be an industry insider or go to a dusty library to swat up on art or fantastic design.

Democracy is self-expression. Political theorists say that democracy occurs when societies don't need to be preoccupied with basic survival. As survival becomes easier, people start to give value to self-expression. There is time for art, music, poetry, choice of career, choice of attire. As designers, we give shape to the variety of personalities that crop up.

[Design Democracy is] having the choice to decorate our homes in any way we like, whether they conform to notions of style or not. I'm challenging myself to become less of a design snob. I can't quite bring myself to paper my flat with Cole and Sons Woods wallpaper, even if it's aesthetically one of my favourite designs, just because it's everywhere, and everyone already has it.

Design democracy is about giving everyone and anyone the chance to express their take on design. With the introduction of blogs this has become more prevalent than ever before and gives us all a voice; we are no longer restricted to sourcing ideas from traditional media such as glossy magazines and television.

    Yeah...Ok...Bye

I think 'design democracy' is the fact the everyone has the right to an opinion on design. In terms of the way you decorate your home, I think design is very much a democracy; the decision of how to decorate, is yours to make. Personal taste can make a house a home and as a consumer you are both, the designer and the client.
